GA 1982 GSL third member in 1979 rear?

I was leaving work Tuesday and long story short my rear crapped out on me. I did some searching and i know i can swap the "whole" rear end,"drum to drum", but i found a rear for 250.00. I can get just the third member a lot cheaper. Would this work? My problem is cash.

Direct swap. But make sure you get the entire 3rd member including the front casing and an untouched pinion nut or you will be spending even more having the fears sets up.

You can swap the third members between years to a degree. At some point in '83 mazda changed the drive line flange size and the axle diameter. Since your car is early build, and the pumpkin in question is also early you should be fine. I will note that the drum rear axle is lighter, but swapping to the 4 wheel discs is fairly simple. $250 sounds quite high, around here its ~$50 for a pumpkin, and ~$100 for a complete axle.
