1980 RX7 Backfire?

I have a 1980 RX7 that runs perfect except for one little problem. When I accelerate and then let off the gas as in when shifting gears, she backfires slightly. Not all the time but enough to make me a little concerned. I do need a muffler because the whole exhaust has holes through it, so could this be why it sounds life a fire cracker exploding from time to time?

I was going to get the exhaust done after I do the body work, but thought I would ask this question now as it is still going to be a little while till I get around to doing the exhaust.

Another question some of you might be able to help me with is, what type of exaust would give me more power yet still be quiet. I don't mean silent, but just not extremely loud. A nice rummble would be acceptable.

Thanks in advance!

Tommaso

Exhaust leaks are a common cause of backfires.

And the Racing Beat exhaust is very quiet, but sounds nice. The street port version is a bit louder, if you prefer that option.

as you shift, excess fuel can be dumped down the exhaust and not burnt.. if you have leaks in the exhaust that means oxygen is getting in, which allows that fuel to go POP :-) not always a bad thing hehe
