13" performance tires

I tried searching the tire forum, but I didn't find much 1st gen stuff there.

Does anyone have a recomendation for some decent performance summer/rain tires for the stock 13" rims? Not looking for anything extreme, but I don't want some crappy all seasons either.

Max7 06-21-05 03:00 AM

Toyo RA-1's, what the spec 7 guys use. good rain/summer tire

DJAngelicon 06-21-05 04:01 AM

Question about the tires. Those Toyo tires that you meantion;
What place have them the cheapest? Also are can the 205 fit into my stock 13" rims?

falken 502s if you can find them

clean85owner 06-21-05 11:25 AM

I think Dunlop makes the SP8000 in 13". I run them on my car, and they are great.

MosesX605 06-21-05 11:34 AM

Toyo RA-1's are a R compound tire, and will have an extremely limited lifespan. With that short life comes grip that exceeds any street tire you will find.

For a tamer street tire, you can get the Sumitomo HTR 200. It comes in 185, 195 and 205/60/13 sizes and is less than half the price of the RA-1's. They're probably the best street tire you can get for a 13 inch wheel and have decent treadwear life at around 20,000 miles. These tires stick decently well in the dry, and amazingly well in the wet.

All the other options in a 13 inch size are touring or all season tires, and their performance isn't that great.

diabolical1 06-21-05 12:47 PM

Sumitomo HTR 200s here ... to me, they seem to be the best thing out there right now.

i miss my Yokohama A509s and AVS Intermediates :(

Big_Ern 06-21-05 01:06 PM

Thanks for the tips guys, but I just called around to all my local tire shops and it looks like these are my two choices:

Toyo Spectrum $89CAD:

http://www.1010tires.com/Toyo_Spectrum_tires.html

Bridgestone Turanza $110CAD

http://www.1010tires.com/Bridgestone...S-T_tires.html

I'm sure I could order something better in, but the tread separated on one of my old tires last night (I guess they're not speed rated very high....) so I'm limping around on the space saver spare right now.

Which ones should I choose? I'm kinda leaning toweards the Toyo's...

diabolical1 06-21-05 01:20 PM

have you check Tire Rack and their shipping policies to Canada? it would be worth the wait. i rode my donut for about a month before i could afford to send in my last order, but they deliver quickly. just try and see what they say ... can't hurt any more than you already are.

DJAngelicon 06-21-05 01:23 PM

Damn they look expensive but I guess I will go with the second one if I had no choice. As for me I am looking for tires that are 205/60HR13 size. The problem with me is the lifespam from this tires. Alot of the one I was reading wear to fast which suck.

Any tire out there with great lifespam? I heard the one in my car dosen't wear out that fast but they are old school tires with the white letters on the side and they are wide 195.

Big_Ern 06-21-05 01:27 PM

Ya, I'll have to check out tirerack's shipping...

can I go with a 195 or 205 on the stock rims?

DJAngelicon 06-21-05 01:34 PM

I am runing 195 and I saw someone at the Rx7 Meeting here in Washington Pushing 205 on stock rims. I think that is our limit as far as stock rims go. However, I am not 100% sure about the 205 on stock rims but since I am runing 195 and they are wide enough they work fine.

bliffle 06-21-05 01:37 PM

Tirerack.com is pretty good. Just ordered some turanzas sunday, expect them today or tomorrow.

diabolical1 06-21-05 01:38 PM

i run the 205s and love them ... i think Rx7Carl is even running the 215s!!!!

RXTbone 06-21-05 01:39 PM

I like the Dunlop GT Qualifiers I have (I like the raised white letters), but I think they're hard to find now...

Big_Ern 06-21-05 01:39 PM

Anyone ever heard of GT Radial 70? Supposedly they're made by Kelly Springfield which is owned by goodyear. The tire guy told me they're basically like the old goodyear eagle gt's. I can't find any info on them on the net tho....

The price is right at only $65 mounted and balanced

Thats what I had on the front right now and the tread separated on them. Mind you they were quite old tires.

bliffle 06-21-05 01:47 PM

Tirerack is $20 cheaper per tire on turanzas, and turanzas rate higher than Toyo spectrums.

DJAngelicon 06-21-05 02:01 PM

To bad I didn't see any of those Turanzas in a 205/60/HR13 at all or I might be blind if I didn't see them. I still keep getting the reults for Sumitomo HTR 200 not a bad price but lifespam is not the greatest I would say and also I heard they wear pretty fast.

MosesX605 06-21-05 02:04 PM

Big_Ern, you should order from www.tiretrends.ca. They're based in BC and have very good pricing on the Sumitomos. Just call the customer service line and ask for them, since they aren't on the website. I've gotten two sets from those guys, and they're a great company to deal with and fairly local to you.

Big_Ern 06-21-05 02:50 PM

Thanks Moses! I'll give them a call right now. They're nice and close so I could probably even save on shipping and pick them up myself.

Rogue_Wulff 06-21-05 02:57 PM

As for 205's on stock rims, I have seen several cars running a 205/60-13 on the stock cross's.
I agree that faulken 502's are good tires, I have a set on my car (205/50-15) and they seem to do pretty good, even in the rain. Just getting hard to find them anymore, everyone has switched to carrying the 512's, probably due to the higher treadwear rating. (360 on the 512's vs. 300 on the 502's)

Big_Ern 06-21-05 03:00 PM

Just ordered a set of 195/60R13 Sumitomo HTR 200's from TireTrends for $84 each.

Thanks again Moses:bigthumb:

Going to take a week or two to get them in, so i guess I'll have to limp around on my space saver spare for a while. This is gonna suck trying to keep near the 50mph speed limit for the spare...

DJAngelicon 06-21-05 03:01 PM

Cool good luck with that Big_Ern

As for me I am going to check with DiscountTire and see if I can find some good 205 size tire that have good lifespam. Anyone know of a good tire with great lifespam and pretty good peformance?

I am, and loving every minute of it! :D

I do miss the Yoko's too. They were an excellent tire.
