13" performance tires
I tried searching the tire forum, but I didn't find much 1st gen stuff there.
Does anyone have a recomendation for some decent performance summer/rain tires for the stock 13" rims? Not looking for anything extreme, but I don't want some crappy all seasons either. |
Toyo RA-1's, what the spec 7 guys use. good rain/summer tire
|
Question about the tires. Those Toyo tires that you meantion;
What place have them the cheapest? Also are can the 205 fit into my stock 13" rims? 205/60R13 $100.00 5.5-6.0-7.5 20 8 22.6 8.2 10.4 44 970 |
falken 502s if you can find them
|
I think Dunlop makes the SP8000 in 13". I run them on my car, and they are great.
|
Toyo RA-1's are a R compound tire, and will have an extremely limited lifespan. With that short life comes grip that exceeds any street tire you will find.
For a tamer street tire, you can get the Sumitomo HTR 200. It comes in 185, 195 and 205/60/13 sizes and is less than half the price of the RA-1's. They're probably the best street tire you can get for a 13 inch wheel and have decent treadwear life at around 20,000 miles. These tires stick decently well in the dry, and amazingly well in the wet. All the other options in a 13 inch size are touring or all season tires, and their performance isn't that great. |
Sumitomo HTR 200s here ... to me, they seem to be the best thing out there right now.
i miss my Yokohama A509s and AVS Intermediates :( |
Thanks for the tips guys, but I just called around to all my local tire shops and it looks like these are my two choices:
Toyo Spectrum $89CAD: http://www.1010tires.com/Toyo_Spectrum_tires.html Bridgestone Turanza $110CAD http://www.1010tires.com/Bridgestone...S-T_tires.html I'm sure I could order something better in, but the tread separated on one of my old tires last night (I guess they're not speed rated very high....) so I'm limping around on the space saver spare right now. Which ones should I choose? I'm kinda leaning toweards the Toyo's... |
have you check Tire Rack and their shipping policies to Canada? it would be worth the wait. i rode my donut for about a month before i could afford to send in my last order, but they deliver quickly. just try and see what they say ... can't hurt any more than you already are.
|
Damn they look expensive but I guess I will go with the second one if I had no choice. As for me I am looking for tires that are 205/60HR13 size. The problem with me is the lifespam from this tires. Alot of the one I was reading wear to fast which suck.
Any tire out there with great lifespam? I heard the one in my car dosen't wear out that fast but they are old school tires with the white letters on the side and they are wide 195. |
Ya, I'll have to check out tirerack's shipping...
can I go with a 195 or 205 on the stock rims? |
I am runing 195 and I saw someone at the Rx7 Meeting here in Washington Pushing 205 on stock rims. I think that is our limit as far as stock rims go. However, I am not 100% sure about the 205 on stock rims but since I am runing 195 and they are wide enough they work fine.
|
Tirerack.com is pretty good. Just ordered some turanzas sunday, expect them today or tomorrow.
B |
i run the 205s and love them ... i think Rx7Carl is even running the 215s!!!!
|
I like the Dunlop GT Qualifiers I have (I like the raised white letters), but I think they're hard to find now...
|
Anyone ever heard of GT Radial 70? Supposedly they're made by Kelly Springfield which is owned by goodyear. The tire guy told me they're basically like the old goodyear eagle gt's. I can't find any info on them on the net tho....
The price is right at only $65 mounted and balanced |

Thats what I had on the front right now and the tread separated on them. Mind you they were quite old tires. |
Tirerack is $20 cheaper per tire on turanzas, and turanzas rate higher than Toyo spectrums.
B |
To bad I didn't see any of those Turanzas in a 205/60/HR13 at all or I might be blind if I didn't see them. I still keep getting the reults for Sumitomo HTR 200 not a bad price but lifespam is not the greatest I would say and also I heard they wear pretty fast.
|
Big_Ern, you should order from www.tiretrends.ca. They're based in BC and have very good pricing on the Sumitomos. Just call the customer service line and ask for them, since they aren't on the website. I've gotten two sets from those guys, and they're a great company to deal with and fairly local to you.
|
Thanks Moses! I'll give them a call right now. They're nice and close so I could probably even save on shipping and pick them up myself.
|
As for 205's on stock rims, I have seen several cars running a 205/60-13 on the stock cross's.
I agree that faulken 502's are good tires, I have a set on my car (205/50-15) and they seem to do pretty good, even in the rain. Just getting hard to find them anymore, everyone has switched to carrying the 512's, probably due to the higher treadwear rating. (360 on the 512's vs. 300 on the 502's) |
Just ordered a set of 195/60R13 Sumitomo HTR 200's from TireTrends for $84 each.
Thanks again Moses:bigthumb: Going to take a week or two to get them in, so i guess I'll have to limp around on my space saver spare for a while. This is gonna suck trying to keep near the 50mph speed limit for the spare... |
Cool good luck with that Big_Ern
As for me I am going to check with DiscountTire and see if I can find some good 205 size tire that have good lifespam. Anyone know of a good tire with great lifespam and pretty good peformance? |

I do miss the Yoko's too. They were an excellent tire. |
I used to run 205/60/13 BFG R1s on stock rims at Blackhawk farms. Those tires did amazingly well in the rain. Had a good life span for an R rated tire. Don't hear much about them anymore. Are they out of fashion or not being made?
|
I ordered 215/50HR-13 Sumitomo HTR 200 tires ($48.00 a pop). I'll be picking them up tomorrow. :bigthumb:
|
You might ahve missed a better tire at a lower price. I've been using Yokohama ES100's on my E30 track car and they are reasonabley grippy but still handle water pretty well, and are at home on the road without quick wear. I'm reasonably impressed by them.
|
I say you get the yoko AO32s they're an R compound tire avail in hard and soft. Grippy ass a mofo

Update...
So driving home on the other night I blow the inner bead on the donut spare!
Now I've got no spare, so I call BCAA and get them to tow me home. Tried to reseat the bead myself, but the spare is a bugger to do because the rim doesn't have a safety bead on the inner lip. I thought about using ether and exploding it back onto the bead like I've done a few times with the tires on my 4x4, but the donut is so small I thought I might blow it right up... A friend of mine has some old 13" rims & tires, so I try to put those on, but of course they don't fit since they were from his corolla... So now I gotta go to the tire shop and have one of his tires swapped onto my rim so I can use that until my tires come in. What a hastle... I sure hope these Sumitomo's are worth it |
Yea I am thinking about this Sumitomo HTR 200 also but would like to pick those with a size 215/50 HR13 hopefully. Beside that I been looking around for the Radial T/A GFGoodrich but I dout I would fine any. I run those on a size 195 but they last long and if I can find them that would be great to get a set of them. However performance in water is not the greatest being that they are old technology. =/
|
I've run 205/60x13 for years on my 80 GS with the original stock 5.5" waffle alloys. That seems to be a good profile for those wheels. Anything wider would tend to roll over the rim IMHO. This size is also close to the stock diameter so it doesn't mess up your odometer or speedo too much.
|
I've always run 205-60-13 tires on my first gens, although various brands over the years. But they are getting harder to find. I'm currently running Sigmas that were purchased in Vancouver two years ago. I phoned everywhere for them, and the only other ones in that size were a set of Dunlops --- but those would have had to be shipped from Calgary, where I live. Too bad I was on vacation and needed the tires that day...
|
go to www.pepboys.com they have the Futura in a 205/60/13 and the price is 55.00 a peice the tires are made by Keppy/Springfield and have a 50,ooo mile rating and a nice tread pattern.

I'm going to www.aimtire.com and ordering the RA-1's. I've driven a race car with these things, and they are S T I C K Y.
|
I use Yoko A008 205/60R-13 's on a set of diamond 7" wheels for my street tires... these also fit very well on stock wheels.

Is 215 the widest street tire made in a 13"? Was just scouring the net for some 225/50/13s but they no longer seem to exist. Wanted to find something for my 13x8 Revolutions.
Mike |
Do all stock 1st gens have 13in rims? I just checked at discounttire and they said the original for my car is 205/60/14. I have the 1985 GSL-SE
|
yes I have the yoko yk420s right now. and I would not get them. they were on the car when I bought it. they are not too loud and good for a patient driver. but if you are aggressive then dont get them. they roll over with aggressive driving. wet traction is scary too. I cannot wait to take them off!

^^
Thanks alot, yea I edited my message after I went to epinions and saw them getting trashed like a 2 dollar hooker. |

Hi everyone, I run Falken Ziex ZE-502 tires on my stock 13" rim it has the measurements of "205/60R13 87H" tires. They are by far the best tire I have ever owned on a first gen 13" stock rim. The wheel looks like this:
http://www.falkentire.com/images/IMGtire_502_angle.jpg I will get some pics tomorrow of them on my car. They handle good. 0% tire roll that I have experienced vs my old GoodYear tire. |
those are now discontinued:(
however the Falken Ziex ZE-512 Performance Tire seem pretty hot. I might have to cop these as my next pair of shoes, lol which size work better on my 85 GSL-SE? 185/60R13 80H or 205/60R14 88H |
LaRazaUnida
you are running 14 inch wheels on your GSL-SE. only the S-GSL had 13" rims and the GSL-SE had 14." I have sold my SE awhile back and I am not sure what size tire it can take without scrubbing on somthing. But yes you have the 14 inchers. :) |

Here are the pics of my car with the Falken Ziex ZE-502 "205/60R13 87H" :bigthumb: tires on my stock 13" rims. They look real nice to me and performance is A+.
Pics were taken on my cell phone so quality might not be 100% perfect. http://24.28.249.130/pics/Falkentire1.jpg http://24.28.249.130/pics/Falkentire2.jpg http://24.28.249.130/pics/Falkentire3.jpg http://24.28.249.130/pics/Falkentire4.jpg |
Nice Tires, I like the way they look for I still think that for my car with the white letter on the tires look alot better for me. I might try this tires I came across and hopefully they are not expensive. They are Mastercraft Performance GT or something like that.

B And thanks alot '85GSL-SE for letting me know they are 14s! I think I am going to go ahead and purchase these tires when it comes that time. As some of you may have I read I was going to be taking my car earlier this year to Mexico to get everything re-done. Well funny thing happens that the day before I was to leave my car broke down and I finally got everything repaired and extra thanks to a fellow board member who sold me an AFM that I needed to get her into working mode. I plan to still take it to Mexico sometime this year fix the car up and give it to my younger sister as a surprise Xmas present. Older brother has to do what an older brother has to do:) |
