LOL.. I hear you there. i tried running just this muffler when I had a NA setup and Racing Beat header and it sounded like an unmufflered P51 flying by.. LOL

I ended up having to install that intermediate muffler just to make it reasonable.

Ugh... I think I need to move my "axle hump" over a bit as its touching my upper WATT LINK bushing and I know is affecting my suspenion travel. I hear it hit when I go over a speed bump. It looks like the exhaust is pressing down and out on the link and I know this can't be good. I'm hoping I can just cut the straight piece of 3" just before and after the hump and twist the hump to clear the watt link. With some fancy welding work and 3" couplers I think I can make a better hump.

Anyone else have this trouble installing their 3" exhaust ona 1st gen?

I need some suggestions people.
I am getting some boost creep... more evident with 3" exhaust.
I tuned down my wastegate actuator pot linkage to open at about 6-7 psi, but, boost will creep up around 12 psi at redline.
Anyone have any suggestions?
I was thinking of replacing my actuator pot... maybe mine isn't opening enough. Do they make "longer" travel actuators? mine might just be 20 years old and shot...
Another option would be to port/remove material around the wastegate flange's swingvalve to maybe facilitate more flow... Or, maybe remove the material seperating the smingvalve from the turbo outlet...Suggestions?
BAH... never easy.

Pretty sure know one answers anymore because of your lack of the search button. Look in the 2nd gen section. PORT YOUR WASTEGATE. Man up take off the turbo and bore that ****** out.

Well, I assumed my problems were related to 12a turbo applications. I wasn't trying to act dumb. Is boost creep a regular problem?
And... I have tried searching. i can't find anything. I really can't port my wastegate exhaust passage due to limited size of swingvalve. I guess I could port out the exhaust housing wastegate port, weld on a larger swingvalve diaphram (the round metal part) and also port out the swingvalve opening as well.

Accomplishment

What a sense of accomplishment. I removed the turbo, ported the exhaust housing, ported the wastegate swingvalve assembly, installed a larger swingvalve flapper, connected the wastegate dump to the exhaust system and got it all back together and running in one afternoon.

What a pain.

The existing exhaust housing opening to the wastegate was about 3/4" and is NOW 1 1/8"... Thats more than double the cross-sectional area. I ported the wastegate housing to dump into the turbo exhaust (like a T3/4 internal wastegate) and tied the wastegate dump into the exhasut system.

The result? NO CREEP... ZERO. And I ran the **** out of it... shift buzzer through 3 gears and 90 mph... never went over 9 psi.

Whew... I actually feel like I'm at a point where I can chill for a bit. The exhaust creep was always bugging me and making me keep my foot out of it.

Here are some pics of my exhaust housing before and (almost) after. And, a pic of my wastegate housing before and after (before I did a lot of finish grinding and installed the larger flapper)... but, you get the idea.

LOL... I remember when I first started collecting parts for this turbo install.. i really thought I had planned everything out. I was even confident I could be all set up over a weekend.... That was the end of January

Well, goes to show you a reliable turbo setup will cost at least TWICE what you figured and take at least 10 TIMES longer than you antisipate to get it tuned. I should have just bought a TII... ... UGH... what am i thinking!!

Another milestone

GSL rear end installed with disc brakes, LSD and steel braided brake lines

LOL.. I just did a couple donuts with the front end staying in one place... and the burnout was epic

So WORTH the trouble of the swap

This is why I hate my OEM gauges.

Going to work today and I see this:





When my aftermarket shows this:




Anyone know an easy fix? This happens rarely and seems to "bounce back" after a bit.

You have a wire or the sensor is grounding out. Look for chaffed wires and OHM out the sensor. It's right by the dipstick.

Well the temp gauge isn't the only issue. I have 190 miles on this tank of fuel and have more like a qaurter tank of fuel not a full tank.
The gauge "funkiness" affects both gauges and goes away at the same time.
If it was just the temp gauge I would know to track that down, but, sense it's both gauges I'm worried it may be a gauge cluster board failure

sounds like crappy grounds. Run a few chassis to engine grounds and remove the cluster and run a good ground to the gauges.

Yeah, that sounds like a good plan. Now I just need to figure out where to ground my OEM gauges.

Maybe use the FSM wiring diagram, T-into the existing ground and run a ground wire to the body??

Hey guys,
I'm thinking about upgrading from the stock coils to a set of MSD Blaster 2 coils. I'm currently running stock ignition, NGK B9S spark plugs at 15 gap on my 12A with a cartech turbo running 8-9 psi, locked dizzy at 10* advanced, Carter 400cfm carb, Carter fuel pump at 6 psi, Summit canister fuel filter and full 3" exhaust.

I was thinking of switching back to my NGK BR8EQ plugs after the coil upgrades... any thoughts? (I originally switched to the tight gap on the B9S plugs because I was warned about flame "blow out" at high rpm... although I had never been subject to this phenomenon before.)

Are BR8EQ's all around good or should i go with a colder/hotter plug on the leading/trailing/both??

EXACTLY which MSD coils should I buy?

Any other coil recommendations?

I just bought 2 MSD blaster 2 coils for my N/A setup. They work pretty well, but expensive when you gotta buy 2 of em. As for plugs I got no advice for ya, that just me tho.

Any more info. on this build? Any videos at all? I know where an exact Cartec turbo setup like this is sitting. The only difference that I think I noticed was that there seemed to be a coolant line T'd into the rad line.

The coolant line seemed to go from the manifold section where the carb. bolts onto at. Maybe I didn't look close enough, but I just looked at the car a few days ago. It is a 79 SA with 64k on the clock, a roll bar installed, and the targa bar as well....

Looks like you've found the earlier turbo setup. Is it the kind which uses the stock intake and a spacer for the turbo interface? i am curious now Gonna need some pics now

Any vintage CarTech setup is a find in my opinion!!

My setup is doing great... still running strong.

I've been putting some highway miles on it lately... averaging 17.5 to 19.2 MPG!!!!! Go figure, that's better gas mileage than before my turbo. BUT, as soon as I start driving a bit aggressive or go screaming up Mary's Peak I get a little over HALF that mileage

Every time I give someone a ride I get pretty much the same response...
clinched legs against firewall, frantically grabbing for the door-jam, dash and center console simultaneously and a deep giggle with the occasional "oh $#!T".

I'm not saying I'm putting out ridiculous horsepower numbers or doing wheelies off the line. I just know how to kick the *** out around corners and haul *** up a mountain

Pretty much everyone you rides in my car thinks all the work... all the time... all the money was worth the SOUND OF A TURBO SPOOLING THROUGH 3" EXHAUST IN AN FB
