VA 1 gen fuel tanks

Is anyone aware of a company making new 1 st gen fuel tanks, say for a 1984 1.1 car? I see some New old stock for 600.00 and checked out the company the rebuilds and coats them for 350-400. That is more than I want to pay. Has any one discovered one that fits from another vehicle with SLIGHT modification I have worked out an alternative but would like to stay with an original. Just bought a new one for a '92 Mustang restoration for $113.00, that would be a nice price. Never know unless you ask.

welcome to the board.

i can't offer any alternatives for getting a "new" tank or "substitute", but i can offer an unsolicited perspective.

so, as someone that spends most of his time broke, than on top, i can appreciate not having $600 to spend on a tank, but comparing it to '92 Mustang parts is probably not a reasonable venture. somehwat popular domestic car that probably has companies cranking parts out to undercut the dealers vs. a somewhat obscure Japanese sports car from the 70s, with little=to=no aftermarket support (relatively speaking, of course). make sense???

what condition is your tank in currently?

if it's not full of holes or something, then you can restore yourself with a few weekends of work. i did mine a few months ago, and while i can't speak for function yet (car is not yet running), it seems to have turned out pretty nice. POR-15 has everything you will need.

if your tank does have holes, then you will obviously need to consult someone with the proper metalworking skills. that will probably cost you some coin, and then you will have to weight that against either the new one you found, or a used one that may or may not pop up in a timely fashion.

I understand what you are saying. Been restoring vehicles for well over 50 years and messing with RX7s for over 30. I have restored a few RX 7 tanks, one is in my son's RX 7. My thought is that there is something close, that would fit. I am not thinking show correct just safe and functional and looks right. Heck I can fabricate one with my TIG welder out of Alum or SS, if push comes to shove, which I may do.. There just has to be a better way than going through all that effort. My RX 7 Hotrod with a Ford 302 and '95 Vette suspension is going to have a 15 gallon cell tucked up under it, which might be my option for a couple of drivers that I plan on restoring (have 7 1st gens) Just thought that someone on the forum that had the same need, found a work around. I appreciate your comments though

well, i humbly withdraw ...

with 7 Gen 1 cars and other cars in your stable, you're obviously not helpless or a novice. that was the angle which i approached my response. for you, in your case, i have no useful input.

my '84's tank is pretty ratty, so i will be looking for responses to your thread.

I'd just buy a new oem tank. It fits, works, and has no issues (shouldn't at least).

Maybe a better question might be is there someone that currently works at a Mazda dealership that can offer members (us) discount on parts? On other car forums there are dealership sponsors that support the forum/members and offer discounts and group buys. With so many members on here I'm surprised I haven't seen or heard of any dealership support.

i did a little spreadsheet, but its simple, and we can cut to the chase

there are three tanks currently available new from Mazda, the GSL-SE, FA66-42-110A, the 12A Turbo F041-42-110A. the only non EFI tank still available is the Japan Market 84-85 6 port 12A, F032-42-110

cost of all these is in the $500 range, so repair of the old tank makes sense
