Its part of the fuel level sender, the thing that connects the rectangular float box.

Seriously, that pic is way too damn small. That's like one of those pics that Conan shows where it's zoomed in so you can just see a few pixels and it ends up being someone ******* a sheep.

OK, so what I guess Iam saying is it is the burnt out remnance of a piece of the electrical wiring inside the altenator??? Yeah. Come on like anyone would know what the thing is called. Cheers Sue
