Unhappy **Just installed RB Headers/ Dosent idle, HELP ! !**

i just swapped RB Headers/presilencer from my crashed one to my other 84SE removed air pump, acv, all the emmisions stuff...so now it dosent idle....dosent even stay up if i give it gas just wants to die...i only tried like 2 times cuz i finished too late and it was too loud to keep trying....

so hopefully later when i get off work i try any suggestions that you guys have to get to idle right...

i know once you remove all that stuff you have to tune the car the air/fuel mixture an all that stuff soo how can i do that???? how can i tune it after taking off all that stuff...

same prob with the other SE after removing the acv and putting the block off plate, b-4 i crashed it >sigh<

so if anyone has suggestions on how to get it to idle and get the proper air/fule ratio and whatever else i have to tune...PLEASE LET ME KNOW.....

thanks,

Ryan

Removing the rat's nest on a fuel injected car is far trickier than on a carb'd, as the computer will be looking for certain signals. I'm not sure why you removed the stuff in the first place, as it really doesn't clutter the engine bay nor affect performance as the rat's nest on the 12A does.

Two possibilities that spring immediately to mind: The blockoff plate is poorly sealed, providing too much air, or the computer thinks the car is fuel starved and is adding too much fuel, in effect choking the engine.

oh yeah, btw, just to eliminate these things ive already:

1. Have all the gaskets on properly & bolts an TORQUED them.

2. Ive already hooked up the pipe for the backpressure thingama gigger.

3. 02 sensor is hooked up properly. Althought the top part of it where the wire comes out got bent a little bit by the heat sheilds but dosen't look like it brok or lost any connections.

4. Removed the air pump & acv and put red rtv on the block off plate.

5. Have the dual pulley and same both belts. But really made them tight...to where they barely have any play...could they be too tight???

6. Plugged the connection for the airflow meter.

Have not really checked for leaks of if anything is unplugged or got disconnected, like i said i finished too late....>sigh<

anything else i should check for????

thanks guys...

manntis,

its a 84SE 13B FI

i didn't remove the rats nest. just the air/pump,acv.

the block of plate is sealed good trust me put plents of RTV, both on the plate and the engine. Because there was RTV all over the plate (even where the holes were on the engine, but not to much)would it make a difference???

[quote]Two possibilities that spring immediately to mind: The blockoff plate is poorly sealed, providing too much air, or the computer thinks the car is fuel starved and is adding too much fuel, in effect choking the engine.[quote] so how can i solve the 2 possibility???

thanks,

ryan

put the rats nest back in.. make sure all your vac lines are going to the right places.. and check for a massive leak (intake.. check your manifold gaskets..and the big 3 inch wide pipe from the AFM).. ryan.. what do u mean by plugging the connection for the AFM???

andy,

the only plug that goes into the AFM. Just saying everything that I checked. Like pluged the alternator in, connected the starter wire, ect.

**I did not remove the RATS NEST**

Like I said it was late so I couldnt really fully check all the vac lines and the 3in pipefrom the AFM...but im sure its on properly cuz i made sure as i was putting it on.

So if it turns up its just a vac line or leak some where what adjustments can i make if it starts idlinge funny cuz i know it will...how do i tune it...

I say it's a big vaccum leak somewhere too. Get somebody to start the car and see if you can hear any noticable leaks.

Isn't there like a hose that runs to some sort of pressure regulator on the right shock tower. I think it's an idle mixture control. I always knock it off hwen I'm working on that side of the engine

First, you might loosen the tension a little bit on the belts (you don't need them that tight).

Check for any intake leaks such a vacuum hoses coming loose. You should hear it when the car is on. It should idle w/o you messing with the fuel mixture.

The hose MarkS is referring to runs to the boost sensor. It is near the fuel ration adjuster (lean to rich). Worth a look, cause it sounds like a classic example of an air leak.

I think, it eventually just goes away.

Ehh, at least it did for me in my carbed 12a.

After I did the mechanical secondaries mod, I would notice that the car was pretty damn hard to start, and keep running. Any choke applied would kill it. Any gas given, would kill it.

I dunno what it was.....but, 99% of the problem, just seemed to go away on itself.

But, if you do have something to fiddle with for your fuel, by all means......go crazy.
