What wheels to go with on a Widebody?

I am mounting my Mariah Mode 1 Widebody and I decided to go with the Re-Speed big brake kit. Now, I need to find some 5-lug wheels.

I want to stay period correct as far as style goes. I will be going with 17”s though as I need to take advantage of modern tires and widths. Wheels will be staggered 8-9” in the front, 9-10’s in the back.

Wheels will either be two or three piece. The car is and will be painted black. The centers will either be gold or black. I think cold centers on a black old-school car look delicious.

Please vote or add your own suggestions. I’m looking at buying used and refinishing them so if you suggest something, please add a picture and where it can be bought. If I can’t buy it, then the suggestion is useless.

Thanks for voting and your suggestions!

BBS RS

Period correct (launched in ’74), beautiful and classy. You can find a lot of these on-line. However, if anyone has suggestions of the best place to buy them, I’m all ears. Only downside is that they are common. My rating 8.9.

BBS LS

A slightly newer, slightly cleaner look, but still has that old-school BBS charm. My rating 8.5.

SSR Mesh

Old-School Japanese wheels at their finest. Rarer and harder to find then the BBS. My rating 8.0.

O.Z. Racing Futura/Pegasus.

Some Italian style, like the BBS, also use don old-school Porsche and Lotus cars. Futura seems more common and I like them more. I simply included the Pegasus because there are some for sale in the wheels and tires section and a bird in the hand… I think I like the Futuras more as they have a flat front, the Pegasus are have some bowing that is not unattractive. My ratings Futura 8.5, Peagasus 8.1

Futura

Pegasus set currently for sale

I'm digging the RS and the Pegasus. What colour will you be going with?

Car will be black, wheel lip polished, and centers gold except SSR mesh which should be black.

Best place that I have found for the LM's is here:

http://www.memoryfab.com/wheels/used

About $1,200-$1,300 a set with tires.

Another option is custom wheels to get just the right offset such as CCWs

I'm now sporting SSR Formula Mesh on the wide body. 9" front, 10" rear. If you can hook up with someone from Japan, there are plenty of them for sale on Yahoo.jp. The nice thing about the SSRs is you can change out the centers. Just have to make sure you have the right letter designation for the centers. Iirc, there are 4 different ones, A, B C and D. I have one pair of centers that appear to be for a front wheel drive rim that doesn't fit the 7, 9 or 10" rims that I have. I do have a spare pair of 15X7 rims with the GSL-SE pattern that I can't use.

Btw, my SSRs were cast in 1985.

Biased opinion probally, but I love my CCW's. That being said, I also love the other options (mainly the rs and ssr mesh). Although it will be more difficult to find the exact wheels you want.

Great input guys! Your CCWs are beautiful and so are the SSRs. Now I have to get the RS just so that we don't have another black turbo WB with the exact same rims!

I will probably have to go with the regular silvers for now and get them done in gold later.

Also, anyone running 18's or is 17 the max?

Yeah, CCW needs to added to the list. Pretty much any BBS wheel, LM, LS, RS are going to look amazing. The pic you have of the SSR dont do them justice. Those are gorgeous wheels!

Not a big fan of 17"s (I'm happily on 14"s for the street, 13" for the track) but I know how you feel about that. If any FB could pull off 17s, it would have to be a widebody. Given that you are looking at competing with this car I would suggest you reconsider doing a staggered wheel setup, or at least look into more though.

I dig the older school BBS RS and SSR's myself, but I don't think old school doesn't really mash with all the modern tech on your car. Try the CCW's or the other BBS you showed, they take old school mesh with a modern flair. CCW's are also really light for how big they are, definately something to be concerned with man, I didn't see you taking that in consideration with the wheels you posted.

All just my take on it man, for what its worth

I appreciate the input. I guess I should have specified that these are street wheels that I am looking for. I would not be buying expensive wheels for the track as anything beat up but in good working shape is fine.

That being said:
All of these options are light, I did not go in to posting the specs, because as street wheels one or two lbs each way is not going to make a difference.
Granted you can get some really wide custome made 13s and 14s, however, try to find a high-performance street tire for it and there are not any. Even race tires have very few options in 13". I have some 13x8 and the only one who makes tires that fit is is Hooser.
Staggered wheels is not the best set up for the track but these are not track wheels and they are doable (what came stock on my M3 competition package)
I'm a little confused about the modern tech on my car. FI? that came stock. Six-point harness? Yes, that is newer but it is safer. T04? Turbo technology is old although the T04 is a newer design. I will not go to an 80s' turbo just to be authentic. There is really nothing flashy or modern on my car besides updated parts that exsisted in the 70's and 80's. The only thing I can think of is a wideband 02 sensor.

Eventually I will get some track wheels. However, since I am still HPDE I prefer to learn the car with street tires and once I get the lines right and get used to the power, I will look into race rubber and wheels.

BBS RS is what I went with. They have just been redone and are silver with gold hardware.

I bought them from this guy without those undersized tires:
http://zilvia.net/f/wheels-tires/312...new-tires.html

You may be happy to know that I did get 16x9 "square" setup 245x45 16's are still a common tire size so I can run wider tires without going 17's. I will need to use a 10 mm spacer in the front which may require a spacer in the back to make it look "right"

Either way, I got them for a good price, so I will figure out a way.

Thanks for the input!

Yeah, looks like he sold his MX-5 and the wheels are just sitting in his garage. He is just waiting for paypal to clear and he will send them out. At least they are staying in the Mazda family.
