I don’t think the pump whine when tank is under pressure is relevant to your problem.
Does the whine stop when you release pressure or is it constant. You should be able to hear pump. Normal sound is a steady zzzzzzzzx.
Gotcha! Will do. Thanks and I'll be in touch when I have more info, pics and video.

Update on the gsl-se

I know it's been a little while but I just wanted to update everyone who helped diagnose my rx7 project. So we worked on it over the holidays. Drove it some, it was still running badly. After some test runs we were convinced it was a fuel issue, and it was. Firstly, I got a new fuel filter, as suggested. Noticed the old one was on backwards! And old! Not sure if I did installed that years ago or a previous owner. I cant remember ever putting one on it so it had been a long time of driving like that, lol. Put the new filter on correctly, still ran badly. Dug farther and turns out it was the little cone filter on the suction side of the fuel pump. It was completely clogged with crud. Cleaned that out and problem fixed! Runs almost perfect now. There is a little weird neutral throttle jumpiness that needs to be worked out. Seems to be related to the tps? May need some tinkering/adjusting. Also I completed the interior and the the car is nearly done after almost 3 years! I'm thrilled! Thanks for all the input and help from everyone!

I had a similar problem, under hard running conditions my car would rev past 3k. Found the strainer into the pump clogged with varnish. Cleaned tank, put a filter BEFORE the pump. The oem filter, filters after the pump. Took it to one track day event after that and car ran perfect. Hope you add this filter to prevent this in the future.

You nailed it. That is exactly what it was. Just figured it out last weekend. Running great now!

Just to chime in, I had almost the exact same issue with my first Rx7. 85 base model. Filter in tank and filter in line would completely clog up to the point where the car would stall and not start for 20-30 minutes. It was only after the car sat for a bit and the gunk from the fuel tank went back down the line that I could start it. I removed my gas tank, cleaned it out and replaced all the filters. Never had the same issue again

Glad to hear you fixed your issue and I am so happy that everyone in this forum is so helpful and full of knowledge!
