Over the past couple months, I noticed that the retraction speed on my passenger headlight started slowing down compared to the drivers side headlight. Fast forward to last weekend, and it literally slowed down to a crawl, before it entirely stopped working.
Looking things over, the motor itself seemed fine. All of the arm bushings were intact and looked normal. However, the headlight motor relay was VERY hot to the touch. I started my search the next day for a new motor/relay assembly. However, before purchasing one, I thought “let’s see if we can’t fix the relay first.”
So, I disconnected the battery, disconnected the relay harness and mounting ring, then popped the relay open to look inside. Simply pry the 5 little metal tabs back to release the top cover.
Once inside, I inspected for any damage, cleaned the relay points with light sandpaper, checked them for corrosion and proper alignment, then cleaned everything with electronics spray before reassembling.
Same goes for the relay connector. I cleaned it with electronics spray and added a dab of dielectric grease to each connector prong before reassembly.
Reconnected the battery, and voila…. Works like NEW!!
