SA Custom Shift Boots
SA Custom Shift Boots
Worked with the folks at RedlineGoods.com and have sacrificed up a stock boot to have their leathercrafters come up with a template for our SA Rx7s. Required some back and forth to get the match-up correct, finally by sending them a precious shift plate to use in finalizing the fit. (they returned it) Sprung for both a stock-length shift boot and a short-shift version, since I wasn't sure which I would settle on for the car.
Pics show the TWO boot versions - I sprung for the optional _colored_ thread in my short version. (Silver in this case.) Those familiar with their site know they offer a huge combination choice.
Quality is exceptional! Thicker than stock (vinyl) boot so fitment was tricky until we got the sizing correct. We went thru 3 revisions before nailing it, which of course means you should have NO problems fitting one now. VERY happy with the results and their communication thru the process was first-rate. Was freaked a bit at dealing with them in their native Poland (!) but the process, shipping (NO customs issues), etc. was absolutely painless. In fact, I am sending a BRAKE boot next so I can get that templated too!
Removal/install I believe is now on their website, but pics below show only 2 "tricks" to the swap;
- releasing the 2 rear clips on the shift cover
- using a small tool (jewelers screwdriver) to ease the clip up off the underside plastic pegs. These pegs are damn fragile, and don't be surprised if a few are already broken on your shift cover
Anyway - a worthy expenditure in adding some nice bling to the Interior!

awesome Stu
Funny , I kept saying I was going to send them my SA boot as a guide this winter because I like the one I have so much on my 2nd gen
my new 79 project is going to get one or two made now
If anyone has any doubts , these boots are a great product . The coloured stitching is a nice accent if you go that way . I had red stitching put in for the vert one I bought years ago

I can 2nd Stu's comments and reccomendations about Redline Goods
I've got a couple sets from them. I opted for the charcoal leather w/silver stitching. The charcoal is a grayer color. Stu, they should have the pattern for the ebrake boot. I got em.

Made my own shift and e-brake boots some years back, out of brown leather. They're finally starting to fade, so it's good to know I can get good-quality replacements without having to DIY.
Thanks for the info, Stu!

No, mine was an SA request. I sent them a boot, but it didn't need to be disected (too simple) and I requested it back. I made a set too, bout 30yrs ago. Still got em but it was time for a change. Guess Im getting lazy. Course, I have many more irons in the fire these days.

So, now I'm torn....
Stock black, or match my interior colors (dark red and silver)?
They are spendy enough that springing for both is not really an option, as I'd want the shift and brake boot both to match.
Arg, decisions....

Go with a nice clean black. Never want to over do it with accent colors.
I bought a Black red line boot with red stitching several years ago for my Blaze Red S5 vert. The red stitiching provides a nice tie-in to the car colour .
Thats all I would do is the coloured stitching if you want more than one colour . The two or three tone boot itself is more like a clowns hat if you ask me

Yah, I'm thinking black is the way to go. that way if I ever re-do the interior again, the boots will still be good-to-go. I'm still thinking on the colored thread idea...

Black on black it is...
Ordering was painless, paid via Paypal, and they promise to ship by Tuesday.
We'll see how it goes!
Meantime, I need to scheme up a boot fastener that won't endanger those fragile attachment pins.

You still HAVE pins!? Step in the right direction DD.

I bounced the original design back and forth with them to specifically address that concern:
-extra material around the base
-slightly more open neck around lever so the boot will slid DOWN the shaft a bit as you reach for 5th/reverse
-so hopefully the boot will exert minimum tension on the pins.
First protos nearly ripped the pins off- patient guys tho and think they have nailed it.
That said - IF you come up with some ingenious method to afix the boot base with OUT needing pins, there are probably a few members here who would benefit!

Got e-mail notification of shipping yesterday; so far, communication has been excellent.
I should have the items within 5-10 days, apparently; will report on quality when I have them.
