Mr. ptuttle has a legitimate question, can anyone comment on their experience with the "quality" of the "new" carpet offered by Black Dragon, or any other vender for that matter?

Thanks!

This is what I'm after.
For example in the Black Dragon catalog, it shows it un-cut for the bins. I'm pretty handy with the mechanical end of things but cutting 2 square holes for the bins might not go so well.
If you call them, they don't know they just take orders and are not very helpful except for whats in the catalog.
I also don't want to put a poor quality carpet in that will fade and fall apart in 6 months from the sun beating down on the hatch.

FWIW: Cutting bin-holes in carpet is very easy; you have the steel backing plates with the holes for templates, just follow the edges around with a sharp carpet knife.

Converted my SA for bins years back. Cutting the carpet was the easiest part, once I'd replaced the original sheet metal with the bin-compliant pieces.

Getting the bins fitted internally over the SA-specific internal braces, that was the hard part.

I just put mine in.

I have an 84SE and the back carpet was trash due to sun exposer. The color was faded and the carpet was rotted with several holes in it. I got the replacement from BD. The color did not match very well to the original (maroon interior, and red is the hardest to match). However I will say it looks good and doesn't stand out too much. The fit seemed pretty good, although I did not replace the carpet around the bins. The carpet in the front is still in great shape and the difference in color would have really stood out where the carpet around the bins ends and the carpet for the floor starts. So I cut the replacement carpet at the bar just above the bins, then screwed it back in to cover the edge of the replacement carpet. All in all it came out pretty good. I would say that the replacement carpet is of better quality than the OEM stuff they used, it was pretty thin and cheap, no backing or anything. I only say that for the back carpet, as I have never seen the quality of the rest of the carpet Mazda uses as being anything but great, after 26 years it still looks good. I remember reading somewhere that back in the day, Mazda rejected more carpet from their suppliers for defects than GM used in their cars.

Thanks for the replies. I guess I can always try the cutting of the boxes and I screw that up cut a straight line and put it under the bar.

I also have a maroon interior. But good to know the quality at BD is good.

Thanks

Cutting the bin holes is easy - start by making a slice in the center of the bin area, then cut an "X" to each corner of the bin cavity. Fold the triangles in and insert the bin. This overlap will get tucked in behind the bin and won't pull back to show a gap. Make sure to tightly fit all the clips in place on the bottom before you cut so the hole you cut is exact. If you cut the hoe while the carpet is loose, that hole becomes a lot bigger when stretched.

I purchased a new carpet set several years ago.....and I want to say I got it from Victoria British which is now Black Dragon. Quality was good, but not great (just thin). It had a 1/4" foam pad on the bottom side to help thicken it up, so make sure you keep all the stock sound material, or buy carpet foam from home depot because the 1/4" foam just doesn't really cut it. The fitment was near perfect, but one small spot where the driver's side seatbelt meets the floor had a 1/4" to 1/2" gap, so I just used the cut out-bin carpet to make a small filler strip. Seriously - it was only about an inch long gap and it was behind the seatbelt strap, but I hated seeing a hint of the wiring, so it was a simple fix. Aside from that, the rear hatch carpet did not come with the snaps to hold it down, and that would be my only real complaint. I wish the carpet was more plush, but for the price, I got what I paid for. The car looks a million times better, so I say go for it!

Check out these guys. They've been very good about answering questions and sending free samples. Samples seem to be good quality.

This. Just fold the extra carpet into the hole, then stuff the bin in. Keeps the carpet from pulling back from the edges as well.

I've heard that the BlackDragonAuto ones weren't the best quality. Myself and others have had great luck with carpets from stockinteriors.com. The quality is awesome, especially if you opt for the "plush pile" and add mass backing. We put the blue one in Marc's FB annd I'm having a black one fitted in Project Naomi

For being the first pics you've posted -- you did well. Thanks! The color contrast is stark, but it is very apparent that the quality of the pile carpet and the woven bead is top-notch.

Thanks for posting the pic. Nice job. It's too bad Mazda used crap for the interior in these cars. Between the carpet fading and the plastic parts turning different colors.

I owned my initial car (maroon interior) when only 3 years old and it already started to fade and change color in the plastic pieces around the rear hatch area. A couple of years later the doors started to fade and crack. Love the car but Mazda missed the boat on the interior.

Not so sure that it is the quality of the interior parts, but more a fact that the glass does not have any UV protection. All newer cars have a UV tint on the glass which helps tremendously.
