Talking Not so new member, new Rx-7

So originally I had an '86 base however it rusted out and sadly I had to scrap it. After much looking and looking I finally found a 1985 GSL that i would say is in great shape. It has its rough spots but it is great where it counts. The car supposedly comes from Arizona, and i bought it from a guy who had it in Michigan for a year and not taken out in the winter. I have touched up some of the minor rust spots on it currently to hopefully head off the rust. I also have to put an exhaust on it so I ordered a full RB exhaust which I hope to get on it on Monday. Let me know what you all think.

Welcome (back?) to the REAL RX7 owners Forum Grigg
Looks like a solid car. Everything you show is pretty routine. Doors are due for new waetherstrip, obviously - and that s the time to take a small rotary-tool wire brush to those door seams. I applied POR15 to the cleaned up metal - its black (but paintable), but you can't see it from above. undercarriage looks like surface rust, pretty routine. Can't see ANYthing wrong in fender photo?? FBs rust out there along the rears and tops of the fender opening. Again, by pulling taillights and getting in there with some rust remover then sealing with POR15 you can stop rust from further damage. If fender edges are too far gone, there is an outfit in the UK who makes replacement pieces:
Stephen@sbrooks43.orangehome.co.uk
I bought a set of replacements for the rear fender behind the wheel for about $100 with shipping - nice pieces, great service. He also sells panels for the area AHEAD of the wheel well AND the arch of the well too.

Rust areas you will want to attend to:
-interior under rear panel where storage bins are (behind seats) - BIG prob area
-battery tray !! (under it)
-rear hatch lip at rear

Make sure the 2 drain holes in the rear hatch lower corners are CLEAR of debris AND (!!!!) that the hoses attache to them are connected AND (!!) actually exit the car!

Ah, joys of owning old cars

My story is that a few years back I joined this forum looking for a first gen, then I got the 86 base from a friend and didnt get on here much. Then just recently i started looking again as I graduated college, got lucky enough to get a good job. And had some extra money to buy this 85 I found.

The rear fenders are still good and solid. No bondo either! I feel pretty confident that the area under the storage bins is not too bad, but I still have yet to check it out.

I just noticed today how bad the battery tray was rusted, and thought I would check it out

Thanks for the pointers, and hopefully I can continue to keep pictures updated on here.
