Just bought my first FB.
S2 1983 Mazda RX-7 12A. Owner said motor was blown, push started it in 2nd gear, started right up on stock carb. $150 clear title. Drove it home ~25 miles with one wiper in the rain. Relatively straight body, only dent is on the door. Needs here and there stuff but this car is everything I ever wanted in an FB and more.
Car does have issues though, open header and some major flooding going on but the idle does not lope, car will not rev past 3,800 RPM with a load on it and loses speed in 5th gear. Top speed is 48MPH in 4th gear @ 3,800RPM, but I took all the backwood country roads all the way home with a friend right behind me to hide the whole no plates thing.
First thing I'm going to do tomorrow after work is the compression test, I strongly doubt the motor though. The fact that the car smells and runs like a flooded motor should makes me target the Nikki carb.
Sorry I'm running on, I'm really excited though, now I have all 3 gens in my driveway. What do my symptoms sound like?

i would forst start with a compresion test. that will direct you where to go. next, as you suggested, check the carb. rebuild that sucker. replace the fuel filter, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, check the coils for leakage, air filter, trans and diff fluid, brakes etc. basic stuff to be replaced. this is of course if the compression test yields good results. finally, you will want to post pics of the car. we need those. also, this thread would be a great candidate for the first gen casual section if you are planning on restoring the car and keeping us updated with the project via pics and paragraphs. good project thread.
