the hard hitter for selling it is going to be that damage to the rear quarter panel. it has great paint, but that doesnt matter cause to repair that damage and make the paint match youll probably have to paint the whole car. maybe not though.

id say if its in good mechanical condition and no rust, you could get $2k give or take.

Oh well. I'll put up the engine pics tomorrow & get an idea what one normally checks for under the hood. The boys always took old cars to a mechanic for a once-over before they bought, but if I can't go to a dealer, I'll have to depend on a checklist or something from you guys. Her grandmother garaged it & kept better maint records than I ever did, so I may use her guy even tho he's all the way down in La Jolla. <sigh>

Thanks again.
Looks like your heart was in the right place. Seems you where looking for her to show some interest and put up some effort and you probably would of given her a good price to get it back. Sounds like you where testing her.

It sounds like your are just gonna need to get a cheap replacement batter from China - Mart or one of the chain parts stores. Get them to look up which one it needs so it's a perfect fit.

Remember pos on neg on (install) neg off pos off (remove).

Nice....the exterior looks pretty mint except for the quarter panel but id say its worth at least 1500....would all really depend on the engine and how well it runs. **** if you think about it....to the right person it could be worth 3g.

Sorry for the delay. As promised, pics of the engine. (Battery is disconnected with loose bits wrapped in a towel.)

That's looks to be in good condition. If your gonna sell just take a few minutes to gently clean the hoses and air cleaner ect. And remember to take care to put the battery in. Don't want to fry anything electric at this point.

To put battery pos on neg on. Batt out neg off pos off. With care not to have anything metal in your hand like a screwdriver or the wrench. TMI? lol..

Thanks to all for the advice, pros + cons. If it didn't run, my choice would be simple. As a good runner, it makes my decision a lot harder. I'll have to sleep on it.

If I end up keeping it, I know a great bunch of guys willing to share wisdom (if not spare parts!). If I end up letting it go, you guys will be the first to know. I like it a lot, if only for the novelty factor. Next to the Panterra down the block (which is rarely let out of the garage for a roar), it gets lots of visitors.

Thx again -- will keep you posted.

Car looks nice and solid from what I can see. Forget the dealer as was mentioned. They dont know jack about our cars. Post your story in the west section of the forum. Theres many 1st gen people in so-cal and you should get some local advice.

Good luck. Hey if its as good as it looks you could have a nice weekend toy.

OMG the dealers are so stupid. I was on the phone with one guy at the parts desk and he didn't know what 12a was.

I wanted to update you all on the status of the car. When my son's Cobra threw a rod, he went to plan B which was to resurrect the Mazda & start using it. After 18 months of inactivity and with a registration that expired 3 years ago, he set off to make it legal. First he put in a new battery. It passed smog on the first try & will be registered by Saturday. Top speed is 60, and that's going downhill, with a tailwind. His commute is only 5 minutes, so his biggest worry now is being crushed by a Hummer who doesn't see it in the parking lot.

What a trooper that little car is. Everybody's smilin'.

Good to hear someone's taking it up.

Top speed is 60? Compression test is in order perhaps. You should be able to break that no problem. If you've lost a seal, you're only getting 2/3 of the power that the engine can put out. (Or maybe your son is like: Wow, that's fast. Can't let mom know or she'll worry. )

Somethings wrong with that.
Won't somebody help this lady and her son out?
Put a can of seafoam (get it at autozone) in the tank when it gets real low (< quarter of a tank of gas left), and drive it like you stole it, preferably not around your neighbors (its gonna smoke like a mother, not that you smoke, maybe you do, maybe you're smoking hot, i don't know WUZZUP?!?). Hopefully that'll loosen some stuff up and get the seals moving again.
