Everyone knows about regret. On of my largest regrets was the sale of my 1980 RX-7. I have missed that car so much. It was my first RX-7 and started my whole love affair with these cars.

The guy I sold it to lived just north of the Chicago area. It was a red 1980 with full RB exhaust, Rotary Engineering Dual 36DCD carb setup, DLIDFIS, and full GSLSE suspension swap. It was rolling on OEM SE wheels that were painted bronze.

The car had been stored at a friends house and from what I gathered there was a domestic issue at that house and the car got pushed out onto the street, where it got impounded. By the time the guy I sold it to found out about the impound issue, the fees were too much for him to bail it out.

Most likely, the car was sold at auction, but it could have been crushed for all I know. What I am hoping for is that it got purchased and is still out there. I would love to have it back, but I understand it could be in the hands of another devoted rotorhead and I can live with that. Mainly, I just want to know what happened with her.

If you still have the vin, can you not still go to the dmv to find the current owner, if any.

 

Check Carfax. A lot of service is getting reported so you might see if someones putting registration or changing the oil and what city. Then use the force to find it.

OR buy another one since they are not rare and plentful nowdays.

 

Carfax doesn't recognize the VIN numbers of SA's. Not enough digits. I haven't tried the DMV. I bought the car from a close friend, and she passed away last year, and that is probably a big part of why I wonder what happened to the car. Just to know it was in good hands with another rotorhead would make me feel so much better.

As for them not being rare, I am actively watching for SA's in the area. The only clean one to sell around here in the past year, the guy wants almost 6K for. Texas may be another story, but the cars I find in my area are usually rust buckets of impending doom.

All things considered, I'd sleep a bit better at night knowing the car was out there as opposed to having been crushed. I may see if Illinois DMV shows the care as being registered by VIN.

 

Does anyone know of websites similar to carfax that can deal with the SA VIN?

Some dude is selling a red 80 in the San Antonio Craigslist. It says engine not running. It's not this car but it's close. I sent him email asking how much got no response. It's a roller worth maybe 300 depending on interior.

 

Nice Car JDuncan....understand that sentimental value thing...I am a girl after all so those kinds of things are worse for me. LOL Hope you can find out what happened to her and, God willing, get her back...Good luck!

8 years later and I still miss this car. Sheesh.

 

I can feel for you on this. These cars used to be a cheap commodity. I just paid 700 for a rolling chassis that is a jigsaw puzzle. Body is straight but no engine or transmission. They just don't exist like the used to.

 

I wish you luck , there is one for sale here in Alberta for dirt cheap (300$Canadian....)
