Well, it seems that YOU should listen to me as everyone else actually KNOW what they are talking about and YOU dont know **** from puddy. You are now on the defensive trying to argue a position that held no weight in the first place. You spout off with a very large claim, without actually knowing the facts, its a common mistake with uninformed people. Think before you post claims such as that.
As "turbo 87 II" wisely stated, of course if you search for complaints/blown engines re: the RX-8 you will get alot of hits from pissed off/disgruntled people. These people are a small % compared to the amount of satisfied 8 owners on the road. But you wont here from those people because no one makes a point to post how great their cars are running, only when **** goes bad do people speak out, and speak out LOUDLY. Its true that in the early stages (04-05) there were issues that lead to some engines being replaced. That is not abnormal to a new car. The issues were addressed and strides have been made to ensure 8 owners that all is well; and if by chance u are still one of the unlucky ones, you get a replacement up to 100K miles. Try searching how many VQ's have been replaced, or Porsche, ect. and the results will be similar.
OP, also regarding the compression test. Im sure you know this but getting the test done on a fully warmed engine, from being under load not just idle, is best. GL and post pics when u get it!

If you choose to disagree with my opinion, fine.
Lay off the personal insults.
We are suppose to have an exchange of ideas here, ideas about cars, and not about people.

Signed the paperwork tonight. Tomorrow morning they run the numbers and will call me to let me know if I'm approved for financing. Assuming that goes well, I pick up the car next Tuesday at 6:30pm.
The first road trip is already planned. We're heading to Montreal for Smoked Meat sandwiches That's about a 400km round trip, so it should be good enough to break the car in, find any immediate problems and still have us home by midnight!

Damn, today brought crappy news.
The financing company called me back. They said a few interesting things
1) My credit score aparently rocks. It's up over "700" which is pretty good on a scale that apparently goes from 3-something to 8-something
2) My salary is easily enough to cover the loan, especially since I currently live with the folks and don't have many bills (cell phone and bus pass basically)
3) They *will* give me the financing on one condition: I need a co-signer
4) The reason they want a co-signer despite my credit score being so good? I've never had a loan of equal or greater amount before (my largest being $10,000). They say that the current state of the economy has made them put that policy in place.
I also tried visiting my bank (TD Canada Trust) to see if they'd give it to me. With them I tried to see if they'd combine the car loan, my remaining balance of my student loan and my VISA balance into one loan. Again they said they would do it with a co-signer. They didn't give me a specific reason, but told me they could give me up to $10,000 pre-auth'd even if not used to cover my other debt, but not more.
So it looks like I'm going to have to wait. I'll take 6mo and finish paying off my student loan and VISA and maybe things will be better with the economy then.
I will be back!

Maybe I'm not seeing things clearly (very sick, tons of nyquill) but whats wrong with having a co-signer? That should be doable right?
BTW-I still can't believe that there are people out there that say the 8's aren't fast enough. How fast do you need to go? If I remember right they are good for a high 14 to low 15 stock. IMO thats pretty good. Its no blistering 12 or something like that, but in all honestly you can't even use that power on the road. I'm easing my FB into the 15s and I know it can be too fast for the street in many cases.

^^Its because people are "paper racers" thats why. They are all about the numbers posted in magazines and 90% of them will never have the skill or motivation to learn how to take their cars to anywhere near its limits. Do you really think even a small portion of Vette owners have ever even pushed their cars over 75% of their potential? No, they just like the fact that the magazines rate their cars 0-60 in the high 3's/ low 4's (even though THEY will likely never be able to get close to that #).
If your interpretation of a "fast" car is defined by straight line acceleration, then the RX-8 may not b for you. Its faster in a straight line than alot of cars, but not in its class. The 8 is not, and never will be (with the Renesis) a drag race contender at any level.
For street use, 200whp in a RWD car that is around 3000 Ilbs or less driven at its limits is more than most people out there can handle (or know how to handle), whether they want to admit it or not.

Yeah I have an excellent credit score as well(over 700) and they told me that it doesn't apply to vehicles for some strange reason. Basically you have to be in complete debt with 3 or more big lines of credit to be approved which is stupid. I also ran the numbers on an 07 RX-8 which is when I learned this. My next attempt will be with a Mazdaspeed 3 sometime early next year. I've opened one more line of credit so we will see how it goes.

RX-8 to a MS3?? Boy you really did a 180 on that one real quick, LOL. Personally, after driving a nimble RWD 8 with cat like reflexes, i couldnt go back to FWD.
If i had 2 or more kiddies it might be in the cards As far as performance, with the exception of the freakish Cobalt SS, the MS3 is at the top of the food chain in its class. As an all around package its unmatched in its class. Either way u cant lose, both the 8 and the MS3 are great cars.

A cosigned loan can be a great way to build credit history... and it makes absolutely no difference, if you pay it back on schedule.
Your cosigner has to really trust you, though, and they have to have the credit to carry the loan if you do fall out.
More a risk for them, than for you.

then everyone buy rx-8's.
I test drove it and wasn't impressed. And the thing about it is that the auto critics say that it is comparable to the Nissan N350 and the Honda s2000.

If you cant appreciate the fact that the Rx-8 and pavement are like leg hair and gorilla tape, then you might need some driving lessons.
Secondly, consumer report, is possibly the worst example of... Oh my goodness... They are just...
In their own 'independent testing' they found Black magic and TURTLE WAX to be superior to Zaino.................................. Wow, just wow...
Most average drivers, have no idea that a rotary requires a different regimen then a piston engined car. Its sort of like, give a soccer mom a turbocharged car, will she know how to treat it? No, and you will end up with a premature failure. Mazda has always had trouble with the rotary, but it isnt so much the engine itself as the public perception of the engine which they kill because they dont treat it properly.
Unfortunately when a rotary has an internal engine problem, it is nearly impossible to repair it without nearly completely disassembling the engine, its the nature of the beast. A dealership wont want to deal with a rebuild, they make more money by replacing the engine entirely... Basically the sooner you get one car out, and the less time you spend on it, the sooner you can get more cars in... So an engine that might be repairable (And they do this to piston engines too, like if the timing belt breaks in an interference engine, they generally replace the whole thing...) is diagnosed as needing replaced...
Take what you hear from Consumer Reports, and the general public with a grain of salt... It may be fact, but there may be more to the story than what they are crying about.

What wasn't I impressed with? While it handled better, accelerated better, the adjustable drivers seat was better, radio better...... just not $20 - 30K better.
And I drove home in my 25 y o rx-7 feeling "better" about recently replacing the engine.
And just to spite everyone here that said not nice things about me, I am spending $600 (or one car payment at 6% for 48 months) to reupholster the seats.
