i broke my power window switches
My car has been without windows for something like 8 months now. and i just recently got the window to regulator clips ordered. so i decided this would be a good time to clean the window tracks and window motors, as well as hook the mirrors back up to power.
the lesson learned is, "if it aint broke, dont fix it".
i decided to be proactive and clean the window switches as well, despite the fact that they worked fine. So I sprayed them down with some aerosol electrical cleaner, and predictably, they stopped working. I looked up the DIY on cleaning them and promptly broke both the switches.
The beauty of having a POS car like mine is i feel no obligation to keep it original. So i have the liberty of being a little creative with things like this.
so i ran down to the local electronics store and picked up two of these bad boys
took careful note of the way that the switches in the car were wired. fabbed a bracket out of thin sheet steel. got it all mocked up.
wired it up. made sure they worked. and viola!
i had to move them back because the blade connectors are taller than the original switches. I also had to disconnect the harnesses and remove the switches for the rear wiper motor and the cruise, both of which are no longer on the car anyway.
Im glad that i moved them though, because i can now occupy the front two spaces with more toggle switches, and the ones in front get those nifty red flip-up fighter jet safety covers. and i have the liberty of hooking those up to whatever i want. had the other two gone in the back and window switches stayed, im not sure the covers would fit.
this will do for now until i get around to making a custom face plate for that center console to accommodate the toggle switches and give the wires enough clearance.

I need to move the power window switches in my 84 SE as the center storage area between the seats is going to be used for other things (intercom, etc). As the stock switches are going to be a pain in the butt to securely remount due to the plastic side tab things, moving to a metal toggle such as these would be ideal. Is the re-wiring simple? I'm by no means an expert when it comes to wiring. Thanks
