A Good Laugh

I got a good chuckle on the description of this 83 12a on Ebay being sold by some Auction house. "Car doesn't run. 4 cylinder with Blown Head Gasket".

$340 and located at 928 E. Vermont Ave in Anaheim, only 4 miles from where I'm sitting right now, hmmmm.....

The kicker is, it was last registered (salvage title) in CA in 2011... the back fees due on the car could total many times the asking price, depending on the current registration status!

Smog test history shows it's been in Cali since 1982, one fail in 83, passes ever since up to 2010, last time tested.

It's an LS, at minimum - read leather seats and you can see where the badges were on the B-pillars. Engine bay looks pretty original.

Edit: enlarging one image I can read the one remaining badge - it's a GSL.

When you buy a car like this in the US, do you have to absolutely register it if you only plan on salvaging the parts?

Here in Quebec you just put the car as salvaged, cost you 10$ and that's about it, no matters how long the car was not plated before...

the is a nice car, and yeah the DMV fees would be a killer! back in the good old days, they either would not have charged you, or you would have paid some portion of the fees.

in the 21st century, you pay ALL the registration fees plus penalty, if they are nice they waive the penalty...

Do the fees have to be paid if you intend to register it in another state?

Not sure - I've never moved a car out of Cali, only in.

From what I've read about salvage-cert'ed cars in Cali, the only complexity comes when you try to make it back into a registered vehicle in Cali. A car with a salvage cert isn't a 'car' any more - - it's a pile of parts that just happen to be bolted together at the moment. Re-registration as a vehicle is where most of the gotchas lie.

Autos have a higher 'rarity' factor - not all that many made to begin with.

Sold for $560. A good deal depending on the amount of back fees.
