... and it was GOOD!

Fir the first time in a looooooooong while, I had a free afternoon on a nice sunny sunday, and went for a joyous long ride. Not to a meet, not to a show, not for any other purpose than to get the car, the road, and my buttocks all reacquainted.

No pix, no video... Just the car, me, and the "Heavy Metal" soundtrack CD.

And, brothers and sisters, it was GOOD!

Just sharing a happy experience.

I hear you bro. Sometimes I just want to get the FB out and drive. No racing, no shows, no body but me and the FB. Good times

It was a bit hot out (low 90's, felt like) for windows-down driving, but I was having so much fun I didn't really care.

"Heavy Metal" the movie was an animated version of the comic book of the same name. Released in 1981; the soundtrack was some of the best driving rock you could hope for.

Track list:

1. Heavy Metal - Sammy Hagar
2. Heartbeat - Riggs
3. Working In The Coal Mine - Devo
4. Veteran Of The Psychic Wars - Blue Oyster Cult
5. Reach Out - Cheap Trick
6. Heavy Metal (Takin' A Ride) - Don Felder
7. True Companion - Donald Fagen
8. Crazy (A Suitable Case for Treatment) - Nazareth
9. Radar Rider - Riggs
10. Open Arms - Journey
11. Queen Bee - Grand Funk Railroad
12. I Must Be Dreamin' - Cheap Trick
13. The Mob Rules - Black Sabbath
14. All of You - Don Felder
15. Prefabricated - Trust
16. Blue Lamp - Stevie Nicks

Where all did you drive Glen?? I always loved the drive out of San Bernardino up 18 to Crestline and then over to Big Bear and then down and back to Redlands....

Ortega Highway from Riverside County to Orange County is cool...

Also last but not least, Car and Driver magazine rated the drive from Wrightwood to La Canada Flintridge as one of the top ten drives you must do...(Hwy 2)

Yep, that was the opening scene - - which had absolutely nothing else to do with the movie, outside of being a wonderful bit of fantasy cinema.

To be honest, I intentionally kept almost exclusively to surface streets, as I was looking to excercize the car (lots of starts, stops, shifts up and down), and didn't feel like picking up a fresh set of rock chips. Freeways will me more kind to the Beastie's tender nose after we get one good hard rain behind us this year. People in wetter climates don't have to deal with roads that haven't been 'washed' for 9 months!

Went up Central all the way to Foothill (which is the western end of good old Historic Route 66), which is about 1100 feet of altitude gain from home, followed it east to around Grove, dropped down to Holt, worked back west to the county line, south to Mission, east again towards the airport, doubled back to central and back to the barn.

Normally, stop-and-go traffic light driving annoys me, but it's so much more entertaining in a manual-everything that takes both hands and both feet.

umm I daily my FB, and the experience is always just as good(never really gets diluted in such an amazingly fun to drive car). It's a great way to always be happy. Just sayin'.

Weather I'm autocrossing, road racing, or going to school, my FB gives me an ear-to-ear smile.

I daily-drove this particular SA for most of the first 14 years I owned it, starting in 1989.

Last six, the daily's been my 03 Z. A sweet ride, no doubt, but so 'easy' that normal driving doesn't hardly feel like driving, many days.

Sometimes having been away from something for awhile heightens the appreciation of it.

It Must be an Rx-7 thing. No one else seems to appreciate driving 40 miles out of the way.. just because the driving is a reward. must be why ive put 6k miles between the FB and FC in the last 3 months.

I drive the truck about 2500 miles per week, then get home and drive 60 miles home in the 7. Never fails to make me smile.
