First pics of my "free" '83

I paid $1625 for this on ebay, and the seller lied through his teeth about the noise in the tranny, saying it was throwout bearing clatter. It turned out to be tranny bearings, which qualified as "undisclosed damage over $1000". Ebay's insurance agency sent me a check for $1625. The bearings are being replaced and I had a new clutch kit and slave installed. I sold one of my extraneous projects for $800 and have a nice foundation for an rx7 build up (mild). The seller's ebay name now turns up with a "not a registered user" tag. I am surprised, impressed and grateful that the VPP (Vehicle Purchase Program)actually works. I did not even know it existed until after I got the car.

Here are a couple pics my 9 yr old son took.

Very nice looking car! Nice to know that the eBay protection system works as well, good luck with it!

Nice looking car. The paint looks real good. Do you thinkyou will be able to get out that one dent by the gas filler without repainting?

Yes and no. I can push it out without ruining any more paint, but there is a bit removed in the center. I can buff out and improve the appearance some too. I already fixed the gas door dent by massaging the metal by hand. I just need to find a good way to access that fender dent from behind, but am having some difficulty. I have heard of dry ice to remove dents from the front, maybe I could try that. Sounds like fun.

It's probably not the guys fault though. He just didn't know what he was really talking about. A "new" used transmission can be found for under $200.

Very interesting insight. In hindsight I see trhat he either lied or made up stuff as he talked. He said the coolant on the motor was from a vacuum line on the rat's nest (the actual source is the O rings at intake manifold), he said the oil leak on the motor was residual from the last oil change (is actually that pesky oil dowel O ring by the dizzy), he said the front end noise was grease fittings in need of lube (I learned they are factory sealed), noise is actually the idler arm bushing. The ad in ebay said dvd, cd tv player, he removed the head unit before I picked it up 'cuz he felt he did not get the money he wanted for it, then lied and said his wife put the ad in ebay not him, and it was supposed to read like his craigslist ad which stipulated a minimum price before radio was included. I looked up the craigslist ad and it said no such thing. The clutch failed after I got it home and he blamed it on my driving. When I asked him about some problems in the paint he steered me to look at the fender wells and did not answer about the paint. I could go on.......So, I agree, some things he did not know about, and if he said he didn't know, I'd have no case. I think he lied about some, and made up other things. I thought about a used tranny, but decided to go with the devil I do know rather than the devil I don't know. Whew! I feel like I just threw up.

Your lucky EvilBay helped you out on this. I have always been scared to purchace a car on E-Bay. Doesn't look that bad. Look at it this way. It's probably in better hands now

I've bought 3 and sold 3 on ebay, never a bad experience until this, which turned out to be excellent for me. I have utilized the feedback scale to make decisions on buyers and sellers. If I am buying a rough vehicle I just assume the worst and bid accordingly. If it is less damaged that's just gravy. When I sell a vehicle I give a long, long list of everything I know about the vehicle, especially the "bad". I pride myself in keeping a 100% feedback and was shocked at this schmuck's behavior. I kept goo notes and held him accountable, and by doing so hold ebay accountable.

I have plans for this one, a mild build up, and it's a great foundation. My son and I just returned from a spirited drive around the county, after doing some repairs and tweaking all day today. Even at 100 hp it's a blast. It is the street-legal go-kart I had hoped it would be.

Yeah, that was a great deal and it is good to know that ebay will go to batt for you like that. Its a good thing the transmission problem wasn't classified as an $950 undisclosed problem. I think you would have been SOL.

BTW, I think those are some fine pictures shot by a 9 yo. Perhaps it was an accident, but he seems to have a good eye for composition

How much is it costing you to fix the tranny bearings?

He has a good eye. Plus, we look at car photos together, esp in ebay, so he may be imitating the angles. I agree, $950 undisclosed would really increase the cost of the car.

I paid $850 for a rebuild, including a set of bearings that are not included in the kit.
