I seem to remember him saying he was traveling too fast down a dirt / snow covered road and flipping over into a ditch. Happened about a month or so ago if I recall correctly.

Yeah my side didn't crush in...... by I had a pasenger........ my girlfriend.......... all she got was a little bump on the head and a sore neck. I stayed at her parents house thay night! lol Imagine that. It was about half a mile from her house with her brother driving behind us (15 years old) and it was abour 2:30 AM on January 1st and no I didn't have a drop of alcohol in me. I would have really been pissed if i had lost my car due to drunk driving.
But anyways yes it was just painted the spring before and it took 3.5 years to get it back on the road and only about 10 months to lose her. It sucks REAL bad and it was my first car.... which sucks even more. But thanks to a fellow member I now have another 7.
Well what happended was we were out doing a little new years joy riding on the snow covered dirt roads and we had to stop for her brother toyota to cool down. so we turned back around to head towards her house. I ALMOST didn't put my seat belt on due to how short the distance to her house was but i finally found it and put it on. About 20 seconds later I hit third gear sideways just in the nick of time to hit a 20ft section of road that wa covered with ice. The right rear wheel sucked into a ditch deep enough it'd come up to my knees and it then continued to suck the front end in, threw it towards the tree line and we must have hit a bit bump or cought something and it flipped sideways drivers side first over strait back into the middle of the road. We stopped sliding at about 50ft.
All I really heard was the windshield smashing in and her screaming her head off! It was an insane ride........ too bad it was with my 7. I actually very calmly turned to key off the keep any more gas from being pumped into the engine compt and held myself up at the roof as i unbuckeled my seat belt and kicked my door open. She flipped out and flew outta the car in fear it was going to explode... lol She then began to ball her eyes out running down the road with one shoe on as I staired at my poor helpless 7 I loved so much on it roof. I knew where we where but it took a while before I got my bearings of which way we had to walk to get home. Funny thing it I idn't break out any glass except for the windshield till we flipped it back ovr breaking the pass window.
The car held up really well I believe in such an accident. No police had to be called cause my dad came over and flipped it back over with the truck and some chain and trailered it home the next morning. I was only going about 45mph or so...... it really makes ya think!
Needless to say I'm waiting on a roll bar I ordered a couple weeks ago to put in the new 7. lol

Have RX-7, will restore

most important thing is that everyone was ok. hopefully you will reconsider driving the 7 in the winter. get a beater for worst case incidents such as this. the car looks repairable though. with a new roof and glass and maybe doors. i've seen much worse get fixed. glad to hear that you're in another 7.

Sorry about your loss man. Good thing there was a drift though. Snow makes a good fluffy pillow for a car to roll in.
What kind of 7 did you get now? Is that a parts car now?

Not to sound like an ***, but ever think of making a roadster?
It looks like you were lucky and only the upper frame was damaged, maybe you could make a convertible or something with this one?

Well I really wanted to make it a convertible but we think the car is slighly twisted....... and it was so rusty to begin with....... I patched holes in this thing a small child could have fit thru! lol
And we salvaged basically EVERYTHING from the car...... everything but the time consuming parts like the dash and components and the rear end and such..... it is a LSD so I def wanna keep it.
And basically telling myself it's only a car is the only thing that kept me sane. And I'm back into a black 85 gsl! I have pics of it in the photo gallery.

Damn, it did start!
I have seen many photos of wrecked 7's and ones at the wreckers. It never ceases to amaze me how strong these little bastards are.
