I'm wondering what other rotary engine will fit best in the 84-85 series RX7. I want to purchase a new motor but trying to find a rotary from 84-85 is near impossible. Is there a later version that will work without too much hassle, and where best to buy one?

I'm not sure what you mean by what other, but the 12A is difficult to find. There are however many 13B options out there. If you cant find anything in Cali, give Atkins a call...

J9fd3s is also local and may have some local sources but there is not much out there. Mike would know what parts on an SE that might still be available new from Mazda. My 13b EP car has S4 housings/plates/internals with SE front cover and pan. I did not build that engine but another Mike at Haag Performance did. I am sure he could build you a motor. He is in Sacramento.
