dome light replacement suggestions

The dome light fixture is all corroded. The wires to it are threatening. And they are dead.

I want to run new wires to the dome light, and have a new dome light fixture. Operate with a toggle switch, and of course have it fuse protected.

Surely someone has solved this problem with non OEM parts.

I tried some exterior led accent lights, but they were blue and to faint.

I used one of these:

Replacement Dome LED

In the original assembly. I selected the cool white color. If I do it again I will replace with the warm white color. My only problem with this one is it is too bright. You can easily read a book. The only fitment issue was I needed to sand slightly the edges next to the metal contacts for clearance with the clips in the lamp holder.

The usual problem with LEDs is not bright enough. Not the case here.

No reason not to look for an OEM assembly in the parts forum from someone parting out a car.

Best Wishes!

the rivets are loose and corroded, and the wires are discolored and dead. Love that 31 y o wiring. I'm might use a trailer license plate light.

Black Dragon lists the OEM lens for $28. Car parts places have battery powered LEDs. I bet replacing the battery costs as much as the light.

I got that it was corroded. Neither of my cars have this corrosion issue which is why I suggested looking for someone parting out a car and finding one in better condition than the one in your car.

I'm also someone that likes to rip things out of his car. Like the door panels. I'm replacing them with luan 1/8 inch plywood stained. I took out the center consul. Talk about wasted space. And I cut off some extraneous metal. Talk about useless weight.

I feel like writing mazda a nasty letter. At semiconductor companies, all I ever heard was how intelligent and efficient japanese engineers were. Kanban, Ishicari, and Taguchi....and then their cars have all this waste of space, weight, and materials.

Try an American car of the same year and tell me how you feel about space, weight and material waste.

Try to find an american car from that year that still runs. Professional restorations excluded.

In '84 I had a plant trip/interview with NCR in Ohio. They rented me a mid size american sedan. The speedometer was 3 inch LED. It would tell me verbally if I was going over 55, if I was wearing my seat belt, or if the door was open.

The plant manager asked me what did I think about the car. I told him what a POS it was. He was an ex-manager from GM. NCR thought they were going to go head to head with Intel making microprocessors for cash registers.
