brake questions.....

i started to take a look at the brakes on the 1st gen today, (i am doing the re-speed BB kit) and was looking master cylinder... i have heard of guys "upgrading" to 2nd gen master cylinders and boosters but when i got to looking at it the reservoirs are the exact same size on the master cylinder for the 2 types.... the length of the master cylinders are also identical.... the only thing i could imagine is different valving in the cylinder itself..... so is this a mythical upgrade? did i misunderstand something? what is the reasoning other than the 2nd gen having a larger booster?

Drum brake FB's have a 7/8" bore on their master cyl. Disk brake models have the same 15/16" bore as the FC. The FC master has it's output in different locations however.
