85' 12A Ignition coil questions and recommendation
Good day all,
I'm currently trying to find out what ignition coils to get for my 85' 12A. Are both coils the same or are the leading and trailing different? My car currently has a FT-84 (No brand name on it) leading coil and a Diamond LB-84 on the trailing. Are these how they came from the factory? I've been searching all over but I can't get a solid answer. Any recommendations for replacements would be welcome. I've heard the MSD Blaster High Vibration coils are good for mounting in the stock location.
Thanks!

Is the car running poorly? The diamond coil is original and leading and trailing use same coil. The original diamond coil is very well made, they can be found on ebay fairly cheaply. For an original car in stock condition, diamond coils are fine to keep in car.
I used MSD products for years, recently the quality of their parts has taken a hit and some of product line is not what it was . A number of the Blaster coils are in that group, made in China, high failure rate. Overpriced for quality and questionable reliability.
FYI,bolting a set of "high performance "coils on an otherwise stock car that runs good will not gain any performance. A Direct Fire Upgrade will boost spark energy that translates into easier starting, noticeably stronger running engine.

Thanks for the info! Yes the tach died and the car started running poorly, it sounds like it is running on one rotor. I pulled the plugs and they were black. The car has good compression on both rotors and is getting strong, clean fuel delivered to the carb, I've replaced the plugs and wires, the distributor cap and rotor so that's why I'm thinking it's an ignition issue.

Look in the 12A GSL-Sudden ignition failure Thread by ThirdPedalNirvana. Read through the thread ,your complaint not identical to his,but the diagnostic process to diagnose your problem is. In that thread are all the tests you need to do,in what order and specs for what you're testing.
Explanations of theory on components in system in places. Long thread loaded with info. Any questions you have, post back here. Post results of your findings and tests. Happy to help you.
Your tach not working is a clue. Trailing ignition provides the signal for tach and fuel pump trigger. Engine will run without trailing ignition,Til it runs out of fuel. Trailing ignition is for cleaning up emissions. If it's running on one rotor for leading ignition, possible you have a fouled plug, the statement they're black indicates this. Clean/replace them, try again. You need to pursue trailing ignition faults too.
