79 Solar Gold at local junk yard?

Just saw this post on craigslist... http://cleveland.craigslist.org/pts/2318387971.html

The salvage yard that this is in is about 5 miles from where I live. I can't tell if the 79 really is a Solar Gold or if someone painted a GSL to look like it. Either way, so sad to see such a rare car rotting away.

Holy crap go check the gold one...offer him less. It has the title.

If i could I would pick it up.

Solar gold with fender mirrors, plaid seats and waffles mmm drool.

Or try to get both for less swap parts to make the gold one good. Sell the remaining parts recoup some money.

I would.

10AE??
It's a Leather Sport.
The gold one "might" be a rust bucket.
That's why he needs to check it out.

LS and Solar Gold buy both fix both. Not many LS's were made, it's rare I think only 500 made.

Maybe I will drive over and take a look at them. I doubt my wife will let me buy any more projects but if any of you want to know how legit they are, I can let you know.

yeah in 1980 mazda made a run of 10th anniversary cars, rx7's, 626, and GLC i think, to celebrate 10 years in the US

if the badge on the rear pillar is an X that is what it is.

I guess... I never heard of that.

That makes it even more important to investigate.

It's hard to see.
I was going on, it looks like two letters one higher than the other that's how the LS badge looks.

Anyone have a picture of GSL badge ...isn't the lettering in a strait line?

Just drove over there. I'm sorry to say they are worth about $10. The gold one isn't really gold. It was red and painted over to look solar gold at some point. And the rust is REALLY bad. The black one has LS badges, no X. And while the body isn't in bad shape, it has a lot of mismatched interior pieces. Both cars do have engines in them, but the black one is the only one with a carb still installed. Here are the pics:

Only good for some parts.

Should just get the LS badge for history/collector reasons if they will sell it. I don't think ANYONE is remaking that badge.

The LS's dash is starting to split at the right lower corner of the air vents.

The 'gold' car's got the wrong trans in it; FB lever and boot.

Shame; still a lot of usable parts, but having to take the whole pile, the price is off by a factor of 5. They both been ratbagged.

crap on second look the door panels wouldn't even work for me, granted the original covering is splitting but I just need the panels behind them

let me clear some things up. there were 2500 Leather Sports produced in 1980. the color choices were solar gold, brilliant black, and aurora white. the badge on the black car coupled with the unique LS pin striping indicate that its an LS.

the GSL was introduced in 1981 when the RX-7 recieved its first restyle, therefore, as mentioned by another person here thinking the badges were GSL badges, they are not. the black SA is an SA, not an FB with the restyle.

the 1980 X edition or 10th anniversary model was introduced in 1980 and was available only in renaissance red metallic. no specific number of each model was produced in 10th anniversary trim. it was called a 10th anniversary to commemorate mazda's 10 years of sales in the U.S.

i wouldn't personally give $500 for the pair. they are both rotten.

You can cut new door panels out of 1/8" fiberboard with a jigsaw - just save and reattach the metal cap strip from any junked-out door panel. The upholstery is where the artistry lies.

Thank you for clearing things up mazdave.

I didn't even realize I got the 500 from your for sale add. Just a number that stuck im my head. Yours is one of 500 Solar gold, it's very nice also.

I was under the impression they were in ok shape by the price he had on them....
Way over priced.

Does anyone have a picture of the X edition?

behold-

LS would be sweet for some spares - maybe to the tune of $200 if you had a comparable 80. Electrics and trim stuff worth that easy....
