I was looking up specs on the Renesis engine and comparisons between older rotaries and came across this informative website...

Yeah, I came across that site last year. I found this pic interesting:



Check out the exhaust port on the 15A. Very short duration, and looks like it opens pretty early. Was that an attempt to reduce overlap? I wish there was a later-style 12A or 13B to compare it to. And look at the 15A and 21A rotors. There's no indentation on the faces.

 

I wouldn't mind having that 15A! :P

i never heard of the bigger ones. just a guess but the 15a and 21 a they probably started to make them and realized it would be really hard to get the motor in a car. now a bus or mac truck thats be different.

 

There was a methane-powered compressor that had huge rotors like that. Might be what it came from.

 

i forget what i read it in its a pdf that i have and it showed a diesels rotor motor , to get the correct compression the had smaller rotors on top of a bigger rotors. think of a 12a sitting on top of a 21a. ill try to get the pic uploaded once i can get a screen shot.

 

I know what you're talking about, the smaller rotor was acting as a mini compressor. I think it was being tested by Rolls Royce.

 

i set that 13g as my background 450hp thats sweet out of such a small package.

Yea size is not everything. After Mazda got the Wankel license they improved the milage from 10,000 to 100,000+ with the 12a in terms of getting the seals to last.

It took a lot of experimentation and $$$.

 

the big one in the pic goes to a natural gas powered engine they played with. very powerful, but not so efficient.

Look at how far the rotary engine came from the original cosmo to the now 13b-msp. The lifespans have been enhanced dramatically thus making it a plausible engine alternative on the market right now. I can't imagine where the rotary engine will stand in the next 20 years. With all this researching in new materials and technologies i await the day a rotary engine can last 300k,400k, even 500k+ miles on original internals.

 

lol no but it's a loose conversation on non standard Mazda rotary engine prototypes and what not. You don't think the military looked into it? For mini subs, torpedoes, UAV's etc?

I think that would be cool to build a sub with like 10 of those big *** rotors (biggest one shown). Just for grins...

Big rotor might be for an aircraft test engine. USAF dumped a lot of money into those things back in the days of radial engines since they had fewer moving parts and were therefore more, theoretically, reliable. Fuel economy and the advent of the jet did away with that though.
