‘85 Factory Radio Faceplate Restoration

So I have this radio where the clear coat silk screen is flaking off (seems pretty common). I’m guessing it’s just shiny metal underneath. Has anyone had success removing the rest of the clear coat and refinishing it? It looks like I’ll lose some lettering like the Mazda logos, stop/eject, and the eq lines but the rest of the letters are back-lit so they should conceivably survive some light sanding. If anyone else has done this, I’d love to see your results.
