If you wreck and are unconscious or trapped in the car and a fuel line breaks, the engine will stop. With the relay, the fuel pump will also stop, keeping fuel in the tank...

If you bypass said relay, the fuel pump will continue to run, pumping fuel all over the place.

So what about all of us running a 79-83 car? If the ignition key doesnt get shut off, the pump still runs. The only way it would stop is if we flipped over... Oops I bypassed that too. DAMMIT!

Yet another fine thread gone to hell... I agree that bypassing the relay will disable the ability for the pump to shut off when the engine stops, which might be a safety concern. But really, it wouldn't be all that hard to replace the relay with just about anything else, use the same input to trigger the relay, and keep the features intact...
