(DRIVETRAIN) 84-85 Automatic to Manual transmission conversion question
There have been serval threads on this swap. The easy answer is to make a new braket that connects to the two. The braket is basicaly a piece of flat plate stock with bracing on each side. The thicker the plate the better.
One thing I've been thinking about is to replace the auto trans tunnel with a manual. I havn't looked to see if spot welds coulds be drilled out to get the tunnels out. I have a parts car with a manual trans I've been getting my parts from for the swap. I need to pull the carpet out to see how easy this would be.

i have a 84 to 85 i need a custom braket because with the just M/t bracket it wont work.... but i dont quit under stand what you said doc... also i did a search and did not find anything
Maybe I didn't make myself clear. For 1984/85 models, use the manual trans support and flat stock to bridge the difference.
I'm doing this swap also. If you need any help let me know. I'm not that far from you.

Doc, I want to make sure I have this correct. Are you saying that the manual transmission cars have a different engine cross memeber? I think this was the part I had misunderstood.

No, not engine but transmission crossmember. Also the trans mount is different between the A/T and M/T in 84-85. But I don't see how it could account for that much difference in mounting though. That's a long distance between the 2.

I was under the impression that for 1984/1985 Mazda two difference unibodies. One for auto trans and one for manual trans. The difference being that there was a 5" difference in where the two tansmission mounted.
The 2nd gen bodies are the same way, one set of mounts for auto, another set for manual, 2 different bodies. The mounts can be drilled out at the spot welds and installed on another body. I've never compared the shifter hole opening or mount holes between them, that may be another concideration.
