(DRIVETRAIN) 84-85 Automatic to Manual transmission conversion question

what have you guys done for converting a auto to a manual the holes for the braket are about 5 inches back

There have been serval threads on this swap. The easy answer is to make a new braket that connects to the two. The braket is basicaly a piece of flat plate stock with bracing on each side. The thicker the plate the better.

One thing I've been thinking about is to replace the auto trans tunnel with a manual. I havn't looked to see if spot welds coulds be drilled out to get the tunnels out. I have a parts car with a manual trans I've been getting my parts from for the swap. I need to pull the carpet out to see how easy this would be.

i have a 84 to 85 i need a custom braket because with the just M/t bracket it wont work.... but i dont quit under stand what you said doc... also i did a search and did not find anything

Maybe I didn't make myself clear. For 1984/85 models, use the manual trans support and flat stock to bridge the difference.

I'm doing this swap also. If you need any help let me know. I'm not that far from you.

Jeff20B 11-03-07 02:18 PM

Oh man, Mazda really messed up the '84 - '85 models.

firstgen689 11-03-07 02:20 PM

yes i am using 84-84 glsse with a 13b

You know what, that picture makes me think of installing a 20B or 4 rotor in a 1st gen and moving the tranny rearward. It would line up with those mounts.

Doc, I want to make sure I have this correct. Are you saying that the manual transmission cars have a different engine cross memeber? I think this was the part I had misunderstood.

No, not engine but transmission crossmember. Also the trans mount is different between the A/T and M/T in 84-85. But I don't see how it could account for that much difference in mounting though. That's a long distance between the 2.

I was under the impression that for 1984/1985 Mazda two difference unibodies. One for auto trans and one for manual trans. The difference being that there was a 5" difference in where the two tansmission mounted.

That's weird. On Aussie cars Mazda provided mounting points on the body for both the auto and the manual. I recently did the swap and it bolted straight in.

Rx-7Doctor 11-04-07 09:03 AM

What year was the car and did it have the overdrive auto in it? ^

trochoid 11-04-07 10:43 AM

The 2nd gen bodies are the same way, one set of mounts for auto, another set for manual, 2 different bodies. The mounts can be drilled out at the spot welds and installed on another body. I've never compared the shifter hole opening or mount holes between them, that may be another concideration.

i think it is a 85 it might be a 84
