What's the difference between a 12A transmission and a 13B GSL-SE Trannie?

I've got two gearboxes, One should be from a GSL-SE.
What is the easiest way to tell the difference. Without mounting them yet offcourse
Is it true that the trannie of a GSL-SE has "longer" shifts for more topspeed?
And are all the shift's longer? or just the Fifth gear?

The GSL-SE transmission has a taller 5th gear, but otherwise similar gearing for the other four gears. I believe that the SE tranny is internally stronger than the 12A tranny due to the greater power of the 13B. As for telling the difference, there is one wire on the 12A tranny for the reverse light, and more than one on the 13B for some sort of sensor IIRC.

ok the 12a tranny and se trannies are the same srength wise. other than the taller 5th in the se like he already mentioned you can see a vent on the se tranny that the 12a trannys dont have. its right at the back of what would be the bellhousing and was like 6 inches or so long, dunno though cause im not at home or even in the same state as my stuff.

Hmmm it looks like I've got 2 gsl-se trannies
Both have got a 2 wire backuplightsensor and a vent tube.

I was looking for longer shifts to deal with the torque of my Elford Turbo RX-7.
It looks like I was already driving with a GSL-SE transmission.
When I 'll get back from work I will take some pics and poste them here...

Erhhh I've taken some pic of the trannies... and I can't find much difference.... only circled parts... left is the "normal 12 A trannie" on the right the GSL-SE trannie.
The backup light sensor is alway a double wire in Europe according to the manuals...
So does anybody know how to tell the difference ?

I just put an SE 13b transmission in my 83 12a and it's great.
Why not just put it in gear, turn the input shaft and figure the gear ratios? I've always heard they are the same transmission.

Well.... that would be an idea...
but my "old" trannie is brand new.... don't want it switched for an same trannie but with more milage and the smae shifts...
It's for my Elford turbo.... run's fine... but tops out at 240 KM/h...
max revs at 8K

Not sure what those came from. The 83 - 85 gearboxes had the shifter sep. from the tailshaft and it was further back. Those look like 79- 82. Not sure though.
Miata six speed is what you need. Here is a link for you on part interchange between miatas and rx7.

Thanx for your help, but it seems that you are talking about the same gearbox as from a 13B FC or not? I've got a "spare" FC and there the shifter is indeed seperated from the tailshaft.
I always understood that the difference between the gearbox of GSL-SE is the lenght of the trannie and that you need also the GSL-SE driveshaft.
I'm not trying to cahnge the car to be the fastest 12A in the world , So I want to gets things the best they can, without using "foriegn" parts. Also my car is an European model, maybe that's the difference? We've got different GSL-SE/12A and models/parts?
I've got no clue..

thanx for the link.... It was very usefull for sorting out the shift specs.... Now I know for sure that the shifts of a 13B GSL-SE are "longer"

Can you post two complete (showing the whole tranny) pictures of these transmissions? One from each side, and I will tell you if they are SE trannies or not.
Based on what I can tell from the picture above, they are NOT GSL-SE trannies.
This is a GSL-SE Transmission on the Left, Turbo II on the right.

Mireck, we normaly do not have GSL-SE's. If you have seen any real ones (not just a badge) it is imported from the US. I know a few of those. Also there are no 79-83, but 79-80 trannies (shifter moved further back after that year) If you want longer gearing you might want to think about endgearings. What axle are you running? Still 79-80? I've seen your car in Lahr, but don't know exact specs. Normally a 81-up tranny wouldn't fit the early SA, because the shifter was moved back later on. Are you having a modified dash? 81-83 or 84-85 dash?

Yeah I remember you car also.
I stil have the 79-80 axle but the diff pinion is replaced with the smallest gearwheel there is. So my diff. ratio can not be made smaller.But still get nuts from shifting thru my gears...
I've got the original 79-80 dash... is also still the nicest...

one vent is located next to the starter attached by 2 10 mm bolts to the bellhousing and the other vent is on the oppisite side of the bellhousing and is cast into the bellhousing...
those weird other trannys look like 79 trannys judging by the shifter position

which type is this........
it's an 84 or 85 with two sets of wires (one on each side), and one circular vent on the bottom, is it a 12A or an SE tranny......?
