I think it's needed for the ECU to run.

The guy is doing a V8 swap on his 8 so he did a direct swap of the renesis into the 7,otherwise it would be a pita. I would love to take the reni off my 8 to swap it in my first gen...anybody want a rx8 shell with a payment???

just get a rx8 salvage with a rear end collision. Probably the best way to do it honestly.

correct sir, newer Mazda engines require the factory guage cluster in order to run off the factory management. I've seen it before when a company made a mazdaspeed5 by swapping the DISI turbo drivetrain from a mazdaspeed 3, and found out after much of the hard work was done that the engine wouldn't even fire until the 3's gauge cluster was plugged back in

That was Car and Driver's Mazdaspeed5 Bosswagon. I drove it while I was an intern. Needs a tune...Bad. Goes into limp mode and dumps mass amounts of fuel when you start to get into boost. It has the potential to be a rocket.

Thats the problem with OBDII,everything has to be there......engine ECU,trans ECU,instrument cluster, and often the ABS,TCS and other computors. His check engine light might never go off without a complete swap, and it definately wouldnt be CA legal.

Cool,but a PITA.

***Sidetrack***

It's not an OBD II thing...its a CAN Serial Bus thing.

Lots of both platforms can and have been turned into stand alone. CAN Serial bus computers are harder to do but not impossible. Just give the ECU what it needs.

Its similar to my ls swap and others who are running GTO LS2 wiring which requires the fuel pump, BCM, PCM, TM, TAC Pedal, cluster etc all to talk to each other (CAN Serial Bus). If you eliminate one of said items, you need to replace it with values the PCM needs to operate.

I do not have an SES light but more an ABS light, which i can fix with a little black box...

anyways, back on topic! Cool Swap!

Smokes worse than my car did before I tore it down to find the oil rings totally shot.

And I won't comment on the kind of thinking that leads to lighting the tires up while nose-in to the garage, except to say "coming soon, to the inside of a 7-11 near you..."

I got this idea while I was at work today... had to do a search to see if it has already been done. Apparently it has.

I dig the idea, but does the Renesis share the same intake ports as a 6 or 4 port 13B? So could a crafty man stick a carb on it?

EDIT: ^^^ No it doesn't :P

EDIT 2: Well... the bolt holes look similar. I want to get a cheap rx8 gasket now.

04 08 Mazda RX8 RX 8 renesis 13B 6 Port 6 Speed Motor Engine 36K | eBay

Cause this dude said so... Figured he might know something I was unaware of like bolt position or oriface size. I've messaged him. He said it spun backwards???; I don't see how thats possible. But there could be another reason.

I'd perfer a water pump that a clutch fan could spin off of.

The Star Mazda race cars use Renesis engines. I seriously doubt they had a RX-8 cluster.

The FD warterpump spins backwards compared to ours and FCs. Can't recall which way the RX-8 spins, but j9fd3s ought to know.

ive been seriously tossing around the idea of picking up a low-ish mileage 6 port renesis to swap into my FB. I have most of the needed bits/fab skills to make it work, and the renesis OE build easily rivals most older "race" builds even in terms of basic parts, clearances and balancing

they run motecs.. the trick with an aftermarket ECU is all the valves in the intake...

the Rx8 water pump is in the front cover, but that one has been cut in half, and is using stock RX8 bits, and i see no reason it wouldn't work...

I guess the water jacket is the same (or close enough) on the older 13B's where any pump will pump the same as long as it bolts up and the belts are in line.

$2001?! Thats not bad at all. That's for just the keg?

Think they would accept a bunch of old housings, a rotor, one end housing, and a beat up mid plate as a core?

What about mating to the first gen transmission? I guess I could use the auto counterbalencer and a lite weight flywheel. Cause I'm sure the 8's clutch wouldn't fit in the bell housing of the first gen.

I might look into this...

that one on ebay is running stock Rx8 water pump/alt and belts.....

the bolt pattern to the trans is the same, but the Rx8 uses a turbo sized clutch. AT cw and FB flywheel, and it should go right in
