I have a very, very old bazooka tube that houses a JL woofer in it, it never sounded that great. Seems the exhaust at speeds cancels out the bass frequency. Sitting in the car in the driveway it always sounds ok, but once you drive- ****.

Would prefer a small box in the trunk, or something else stealthy without chopping up the interior.

what you guys have, how long you been running it, and how do you think it sounds?

 

I used to have this thing in there.

It sucked. At a stop it was great but as soon as you hit the gas pedal you couldnt hear anything. Now im going to have 1 "10 in the cubby hole right behind the drivers seat. basically under were this speaker thing was. Ill make a box and set it in the hole. hopefully that will give just enough oommphh

 

I had a huge ported box with two tens in the trunk it sounded like crap. When I bought the car someone decided to make a box where the spare tire was so I put the two tens in there and it sounded worse! I had rips in the top so think the cabin wasn't sealed off enough for the speakers to sound good or the box under the spare tire wasn't sealed good enough. I gave up once my alternator died from the subs.

 

a stealthy install is key for me, not for theft but for aesthetic reasons , I also have my battery in the trunk

do i just give up and settle for **** bass?

 

You can try to put a sub in the spot where just startn mentioned just makes sure the box is fully sealed iirc the space is very small so you might have to go with an eight. I'm not a sub expert but I remember someone mentioning that having the sub faced up causes some kind of problem which makes it not sound good.

 

i would imagine it would rattle the **** out of the package tray, and with the top down the targa probably rattle too

 

Make a bandpass.

It's basically a sealed and ported box in one.




Have the "port" tube come through the to the drivers area.

Like the old skool way that people used to put boxes in trunks, with the port coming
through the rear deck.

 

This is were i think the problem will be. I dont think the targa will rattle. Its heavy, but who knows. Dunno till i R&D but i know the cover is going to rattle and i dunno how im going to make it stop. Havnt made it that far lol

 

its kind of a clear run into the cockpit as it is, the only thing in the way is the area under the package tray.

 

i personally was going to put my 2 12" polk momo subs in there, just for the hell of it.

just do 1 8" in a small sealed enclosure thats made for trucks: like this

but use a shallow mount sub (like JL) and put it behind the passengers seat in between the bin area and the seat.

I will take a picture of my sub and amp setup tomorrow. You can't see anything from the inside because the rear deck cover fits over it like stock... this is the sub i bought though..

a friend and I made a VERY simple box that just sits in the rear directly behind the driver's seat wedged in with some towels to deaden any rattling around the box. Nothing had to be modified except that I don't have space for the spare tire anymore - which isn't a big deal to me.
Sub is a shallow-mount 10" 350W RMS with frequency range from 35 to 800 Hz so I run it with my Alpine head-unit which has a built in high-pass filter and I run the filter at 80Hz for the door and dash speakers. Since the sub has such a large range I only need the speakers for highs and mids... I was running the headrest speakers as normal until about 3 months ago when they decided to work intermittently only and I still haven't sourced the problem. Anyways... I would highly recommend this sub - fits anywhere and has more than enough power for the size of the convertible cabin, even at speed with the top down.

And as for having the sub facing up I don't have any problems at all... it doesn't change the sound as long as the sub has enough room to oscillate to it's highest position without hitting the deck cover... which in 90% of the subs today won't be an issue because they are designed so the mounting ring won't let that happen.

 

If you are looking for a shallow mount sub, go with MB Quart. They are very shallow, and pack a good bump.

 

I would really prefer to keep the spare, car goes on a few road trips so the spare gives some peace of mind

ill have to take another look behind the package tray, maybe a simple box in the trunk for now and if it doesnt work Ill choose a sub that I can then use in the cabin somewhere.

 

i put my spare in the trunk in that little space where it goes on coupes, and i built my own box and put it where the spare would go. sticks up a little bit but i have a 12 inch sub by dual in there and it sounds fine to me.

 

I actually have my amp mounted in the nook in the trunk, amp screwed to a board and used 2 factory mounting tabs that were already there to bolt the board to the car

 

I have a small Bazooka sub too but mine is like the mid-range one and I find it to be awesome. Exhaust sure as heck doesn't drown it out, and even at freeway speeds, exhaust droning, windows down, it still shakes my rear view mirror. Granted, this is it turned all the way up for a simply normal bass hit, so if you really want to bump, get the even more expensive one.

My brother in his FC has mounted a 10 inch into one of the storage bins. Hes going to put mesh over the bin, surrounded by the stock plastic lid, so its going to look basically stock. Hes not quite done yet, but I'll take pics for you all when he is. He already built a sub box out of wood, and fiberglassed the inside.

Edit: I just read the title of this thread, sorry, both of these were on a coupe. I can see how a vert would differ now.

 

I have a JL 10" sub that fits under the rear cover behind the drivers seat. Has a nice box built around it and a glassed in bottom that matches the base of the compartment. That combined with the 4 speakers built into the cover, I could hear all the high notes and feel/hear plenty of bass at speed with the top down. I think one sub is perfect, more than that is overkill, but if that is what you're into, then by all means, do it. With the top up, I'd never turn it up as loud as I thought it was loud enough and I'm already half def anyways.

I'm going to cram a set of pioneer flat 12's via fiberglass lots of it. Amp in the trunk next to the spare. No head unit running everything threw a an ipod or even my iphone.

IIRC, I wanted a 12" sub but it would have been too big after making an enclosure of sufficient size and then get it to fit under the spare tire cover.

welll, I do like how you took up the cargo on area and the sub sat kinda low

I would like to do something simmaler with an 8 or 10 and try to keep the spare tire.
