revs to 2k then dies out

i just got this 90 gxl na and a couple of times after the car has sat for about 5-ten minutes the car wont rev past 2k. it starts and idles fine but when i press down the accelerator it revs up to 2k rpm then almost stalls and goes back down to about 500 rpm. it will do this over and over. the first time was about five minutes after i washed it, i started it up and drove away from the car wash and went a quarter of a mile to a gas station. it sat there maybe five min and after i started it it wouldnt rev. after about ten minutes it was fine. i was thinking something got wet but all was dry in the engine bay. the sec time i drove it home and it sat for an hour then when i went to leave it did the same thing. five min later it was fine. im new to rotaries so could someone point me in the right direction thanks.....marc

Start with pulling codes: http://www.johnr.com/cpucodes.html. It sounds temperature related, so my first guess would be the water temp sensor on the back of the water pump housing. The ECU needs this for fuel corrections.

If that doesn't solve it, I would next check the TPS, AFM, and rev the engine and with a stetoscope listen for proper operating sounds from each of the secondary injectors.

Secondary injectors do not fire until 3800+ RPM and greater than -2 inHg vacuum. There wouldn't be a point in suspecting them.
