How fast is your 12a with Bolt Ons feel?

Before I port the engine, I want to see with your basic Intake/Carb/Exhaust set up along with bigger fuel pump and regulator, lighter fly wheel, and LSD rear end felt before ripping the entire engine out.

I have heard the max hp you can get out of a 12a is 150.

The thought behind this way of thinking is seeing how 150 whp would feel compared to my stock 80-90 whp in the car right now.

I'm getting ready to fab together a header back exhaust based on the Racing Beat Road Race header.

The performance goal of the car is to atleast somewhere achieve 200whp. To do this I am hoping a big street port would help put me there as i do not need a bridge for the street. I simply ask because I think before the engine comes out I'm going to keep it a stock port until it is time for the rebuild.

so tell me guys, how do you enjoy your stock port with all bolt ons, or how do you enjoy your streetport with bolt ons?

my advice is to save money,do a lot of search on turbo engine (I'll get you 200hp no problem) and later want some more HP

when you do intake, exhaust and ignition mods on this 12a motors there is a good gain in power but 200hp is a long way if you want to keep it streetable and 200hp ,turbo is the way to go.

With all my bolt ons (see sig) I'm getting 134 whp which is about 150 bhp.
This was before I went to the RB RR exhaust, Carter fuel pump and TFIDFIS.
I think I gained a few ponies from some of those changes. The car is a blast
to drive, way more fun than when it was stock.

If your looking for 200 whp your probably not going to see it on a 12A SP
NA. Maybe on BP though. As someone else said, easily done with a turbo.

A bridge is definitely the way to go if you feel 200hp is what you want, but I doubt you'll get too close to that with a 12A SP. Chances are you'll really love the way it feels with an SP even if it isn't 200hp. With my Sterling and RB SP exhaust the car was pretty peppy even though the housings were flaking really bad and I was probably down on compression quite a bit. On a fresh engine it probably would have felt a lot better, and been considerably faster. If this is a daily driver or just something you aren't going to be racing too often, I wouldn't bother worrying about peak HP numbers. On the street you'll rarely ever see peak HP, so why waste the time trying to squeeze those last few out of the top end? Build a car you enjoy driving and be happy with the numbers it gives you. If you aren't happy with less than 200 after driving it, then boost is only a few more dollars away.

^ Thanks everyone. Good ways to look at things. I appreciate the responses. It has given me an insight of what to expect with the build options I have before me.

I am trying to keep this car N/A. I don't know what it is, but something about a built N/A car really does it for me, especially in a car that weighs this little.

The thing that stops me from doing a Bridgeport or even a half bridge is the reliability factor. I've heard some horror stories about bridgeported rotaries. Still...I ponder one. On the other hand I have heard of some Bridges lasting a good amount of time.

1. Reliable. 2. Cheap. 3. Fast

You can only pick 2. hahaha

Bridgeporting wouldn't be out of the question as this is NOT a daily driver, I guess what I'm trying to say is I do not know the needs of a Bridgeported motor aside from increased oil cooling, consumption and more fuel.

I've always said that my car is better at being "quick" than being "fast". I have no desire to break the sound barier, but anything under 100 mph is handled quite well. You really don't want to exceed 100 without serious bodywork like airdams and spoilers anyway, because lift can get pretty severe.

Anyway, I've basically got the list of mods that you specified and I am very happy with it. The car is damned quick, which is what I'm after. I race autocross, and speed rarely exceed 70 mph so that's what I'm working with.

Here's a pretty good example of what the car can do with boltons:

back in the day (1994!) i had an 84 gsl, with an RB exhaust. it was nice, but when i put the holley on it, it REALLY woke up.

it was amazingly smooth, and the higher you revved it the more power it made. no CLUE what it would have dynoed, but it was FUN.

ive had a bunch of other "fast" 1st gens, i had an old school 13b streetport with a dellorto, and a gsl-se that was tuned to its limits, and that old car was the one that felt the fastest.

the cheatin answer is BOLT ON a set of PP housings, feels like i'm making over 150hp when the carb runs out of gas (literally, fuel pump too small) @4500.

My 80 SA22 has basic bolt ons like upgraded ignition, stripped card, full RB header and Street Port Exhaust... it felt kinda quick.... that is until I bought a new 2010 Subaru WRX as a daily driver.... now all of a sudden my little RX feels sooooooo slow...:-(

Doesn't the new WRX have the 2.5L motor? Those things are quick, even stock.

Back on topic, yeah, NA cars feel kinda slow once you go turbo. Though actually there's something to be said for an underpowered, light RWD car. Being able to floor it around town without risking getting arrested is fun.

You can do all your bolt ons and slap a wet nitrous kit for another 50-100 hp easily. It's a bolt on affair and can be done on a Saturady morning. Well maybe not he first time around due to the learning curve, but sure as heck the second.

2009 Nissan 370Z:
0-60: 4.9
0-100: 12.1
0-130: 22.0

Taken from: http://www.caranddriver.com/var/ezfl...9e6704627c.pdf

2009 Subaru WRX:

Zero to 60 mph: 4.7 sec
Zero to 100 mph: 12.9 sec
Zero to 120 mph: 19.7 sec

Taken from: http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/...take_road_test

370z is .8 seconds faster than the WRX (with the 265hp 2.5L) to 100mph.

My FB feels...sluggish...even with bolt-ons. I think I need a carb rebuild tho (13mpg on stock nikki = rebuild time?).

Divindriver has a 350.... not quite the car a 370 is! That is cool data though... I did not realize the new 370 was faster to 100 mph...... time for bolt ons!!

a State Trooper clocked me at 148 mph last night. He said he has a 3rd gen so he would cut me a break (no ticket).
Not bad for a 79sa.
all i can say is "give and take" my fully BridgePort 12a with RB Holley set up and full RB exhaust is Quick But only gets 8 mile per gallon.

Wow that is fast, do you know how many whps does your bridgy 12a has? Also what gear ratio you have in your rear end ?

Thanks

stock port 12a with headers and a Holley 600 will easily beat a stock 5.0 mustang at the drag strip! I used to do it all the time, basically would beat any stock v8 or modded 4 cyl with out turbo or juice.

Now I have an 8 thats not as fast . . . too heavy! With the 7 in my back yard waiting on some TLC!

What's the fastest 1/4 mile time on a stockport 12a? 14's? I bet with a gutted SA, right carb setup, good exhaust, 4.44's, and dot drag tires, you can do it.
