I just recently bought a 1989 Turbo II which was in pieces and I putting it all together.

I found that the front oil cover did not have the gear assemble for the electronic oil metering pump.

I reinstalled a new gear and noticed that there is a tension pin that is supposed to go on the front oil cover right about in the middle of the gear shaft. I cannot figure out what it's purpose is because it looks like I can get away from putting it in. It's not listed on the 1989 parts catalogue.

Do I need to reinstall this tension pin?

1st picture is one of my S4 motors that shows the pin installed.

 

The roll pin holds the shaft in bore. I would put a new pin in. You could probably find one at a hardware store.

 

Really. I just pulled on it without this tension pin on and it moves just as much as the one with?

Either way I guess I will install one. Not sure how far to insert it. Don't want it hitting the shaft to score it as the oil pump gear is shifting.....
