Cut California front plate showing only serial?

I finally registered my FD in California and I need to mount my front plate. I've noticed a couple of cars around wearing a front plate that displays only the actual plate number, like a Euro-style plate. The plates were clearly cut off top and bottom, and they're sitting in a special mounting holder meant to do this. There's a Civic Si in my apartment complex with this and I saw a Z33 with on today, too.

Does anyone know where to find one of those holders? I Google'd various terms and struck out swinging. I might just leave the Si guy a note. Also, I question the legality of cutting the plates like that, since they are technically state property and they no longer display the state of origin. However, I would assume a noticeably cut plate would attract more attention than no plate at all if it was, in fact, illegal.

you know that it is illegal to modify your tags. my brother inlaw use to paint over the the Disabled Vet part on the tags of he car( he dad is DV ) and use to get ripped for it all the time, do this at your own risk!

dont do it! why would you want to risk the hassle of getting pulled over.. just rock a full plate to be safe. those cut ones look as retarded as people putting them in the window thinking they are safe, Cops will still pull you over for it.

I don't think you can modify the state issued plates in any way shape or form. I would advise against modifying it.

Cutting a state issued registration place just sounds like one of those naturally illegal things to do.

I've been daily driving mine without a plate for almost 4 years now and have yet to be pulled over for any reason. AND I'm a kid, AND I have put 21,000 miles on it in the past year. I drive a lot!

If you cut your plate, dont cut the tag from your mattress or you'll really get nailed

bull ******* shiet. if you own an old school, the newer white plates can be re-done with yellow lettering/numbers and blue background like the 70/80 issued plates. Again, old school came with the blue plates so it is unnoticeable. so bull ******* shiet

Agreed. Also, you cannot exercise unless you have waited at least 1hr after consuming a meal.

You're in Rancho, though... Here by the ocean, the meter maids and street parking attendants look for no front plate and issue tickets for it.

Thanks for the input, fellas.

I figured it to be illegal... I just wouldn't think that people with modified Japanese cars who are already a target would be doing it knowing that it makes them even more of a target.

I had been wearing out-of-state plates since I shipped the car here 2 years ago. I'd had no problems at all here in West Los Angeles (and my FD is quite loud) because I blend right in with the Porsches and loud exotics, but I was tired of pushing my luck. So, I registered it in CA. I just can't stomach blocking off much of my front and was wondering if this was a legit "out."

Sadly, there's no legitimate out.

I've never mounted the front plate on my Z (never even drilled the holes), and never have been tagged for it, including one night I was pulled over for speeding (got a warning for speeding, wtf?)

I don't normally run the front plate on the -7, will sometimes toss it in the front window if I'm at a meet or something, just on the hope that the cop will not feel utterly prickly that day. I did mount it for my smog check, though.

If I ever get popped for it, though, I'll have no call to bitch; I know I'm supposed to have it on there.

I've never even gotten my front plate mentioned at a smog check, and I've done multiple places.

which bumper do you have? when i had my FD, i got pulled over for no front plate. i told the officer that there wasn't anywhere to mount it and that i was only issued one plate and he let me go. of course i had the stock OEM bumper.

the only car that i have now that has a front plate is the benz. the other two = "where do i mount the plate!?"

My First mod to my Rx7 was taking off that Ugly *** front license plate. I did get stopped once for "no front plate & modified exhuast" be he let me go with a warning.

It helped that i gave him Wacky's Pic & Phone number though... Call for a good slurp!

I've had my FD smogged multiple times w/o a front plate. I've even drove through a sobriety checkpoint w/o a front plate and nothing was said about it.

The mere thought of taking a drill to that front bumper makes my blood run cold. The car is too beautiful to mess it up with a front plate.
