Thinking about picking up a 1st gen

Hello,

I am thinking about picking up an inexpensive 1st gen RX-7 as a fun car.

I'd love a GSL-SE. There is one listed locally for $1,700, it looks clean in the pictures but has 275+ miles on it. The owner hasn't had it long, says it runs great, but doesn't know much about the background of this thing.. can an engine even go 275K with original seals and still run well? I may check it out just for fun.

There is also a '79 down the street from me, very clean and original with 68K on the clock. Not sure if that is real mileage, but the car looks very nice and correct, even has stock 13" wheels. Owner is a salesman at a used car lot. I was told he wants $3,000 for it -- too much, but he may negotiate.

Then, there is an '85 GS with 100K, very strong daily driver that was stored for many years for $2,000.

I guess the question is what would be the cost of rebuilding/replacing an engine nowadays, and what should I look for when looking at used cars? I've had 3 1st gen cars in the mid nineties and I know they can be very reliable if treated well.

Thank you,

Stan

I'm in a very similar boat, would love to know how you decide on the value of one of the 1st gen's...

Thanks for replying.

Things changed somewhat, after giving it a few thoughts I've decided to look for a Miata instead. I love rotaries but I'm not sure I want to deal with a blown engine.. I've gone through that once before. Miatas make great track cars and aftermarket support is very good.. gas mileage for communing is better, also.

Thank you much,

Stan

'78 Rx

I've just bought a 1978 RX and it's in amazing condition, no rust or rot anywhere and the engine is as sweet as a nut, but i think it was rebuilt before i got it.
