Trans problem (non tech, non RX)

Hey guys, I wanted to ask you about this problem I have been having with my Protege. Yeah, I know it isn't RX7 related, but the protege board I used to go to got flooded with kids, and basically turned into the 2nd gen section here. I like you guys more

Well, 3rd gear in particular, when I go through the gears at a spirited pace, 3rd grinds a little but still engages. When driving normally, it will not do that. Also, during the winter time 3rd gear will pop out until the trans is warmed up. I know the grinding is related to synchros, but the popping I am thinking would be dog gear related. Called Mazmart, and they want about 1000 for a nice low mileage. I wouldn't mind getting a craptastic gearbox just to do some swapping with.

Plus I can get my gears hardened for free

Oh, and to keep this RX7 related, my 2nd gear will not engage when shifting fast from 1st gear redline. I have to let it come down to the general engagement area and it will engage. Looks like I got a few more on my hands!

Forgot what I was going to say, but would it be safe to put some oil stabilizer or something in there to help it a bit?

I'm not sure about those little front drive trannies. I think they run autotranny fluid instead of regular gear oil. If you can put some good synthentic in there that may help out a bit. Sounds like you've wasted 2 and 3rd gear synchros at least and maybe one of the drive gears as well. I'm not surprised based on how you drive

I think a rebuild would be in order. Can't cost more than a few hundred in parts to do it right. Beats buying rebuilt or new one for a lot more. Usually you replace all the synchros, any bearings (after you make sure its all in spec) and maybe on or two gears and any seals and slap it back together. Or you can get one from pullapart for whatever their fixed price is and hold your breath.

Try a 50/50 mix of gear lube and auto tranny fluid. This will clean up the synchros and improve the shifting. However, popping out of gear might mean a new tranny.
