Rookie question on wheel size 1st gen fb

Did a search but not finding anything. I am building a drag car, 13b rew GT35r turbo with a jatco 3spd auto. Ten point cage is being installed now. I have a 8.8 diff that i want to run with the stock 4 link mouning points,I would like to tub the wheel wells but cant afford it at this time. I need to make a decision on rear wheel and tires before he can shorten the 8.8 axle housing. I want to use 3rd gen FD 16"X8" on the rear with 10.5 wide Mikey tompson drag radials. in the stock wheel well openings. I want to use the FD wheels because i have them and they are the later reniforced type and very light. My quesition is, are they strong enough? and is !6" that much of a disadvantage over 15" which seems to be the norm & why? Front will be 16" FD aluminum spare tire wheels which i have seen alot of cars use.Second option is to just go out and buy a set of 15"X8" Welds.

I have seen some FD wheels crack, you should inspect the wheels before you use them. You should consider buying some Weld wheels in 5 lug conversion.A 15" weld wheel could be a few pounds lighter than the larger 16"wheels.

wheel size

Try going to grannys speed shop they have a first gen test car running a ford 8.5 and have fit a very nice wheel and tire combo in the stock wheel well.

like 61620B said I would go with a 15" weld racing wheel and one thing to remember is your back spacing it is very important when selecting you wheel width and tie size the best way to determine is with the rearend on the car .

Thats what i was afraid of .Guess i will go with a set of welds. I had already seen the setup on Grannys web site and that looks like what i want as far as tires and wheels, but with a 4 links. thanks for the help.

He(cage builder) wants the wheels and tires before he cuts down the 8.8 so i am guessing 3 1/2"would be ok.But,i would like to get the axles and housing as short as possible for weight reduction. I think i read somewhere 48" is as short as you can go axle hub to axle hub without tubbing on the FB?
