Anyone paint their whole car?
Anyone paint their whole car?
I just bought my fd and want to get it repainted. I was just quoted $4000. That just seems too much for this car.
has anyone repainted their car? What have you paid? Where did you take it?
Anyone in pa/nj/ny?
its a 93 VR FD. Any suggestions? Thanks.

If i had a shop, i'd do it for less and do better work than them. I do all my own work. check a few threads down, youll see my car under the title: "spy photo's of my Lsx7 supercar"
If your looking to get it painted the VR red stock OEM color then 4K is a good start. I hear what the guy in the previous post is saying but I dont care who you are you can definitely tell the difference between a job done proper and one done wrong/unproper.
Cheaper then 4K for OEM colors is asking for problems to a well trained eye.
No offense to the other guy.
oh, had my entire car painted original OEM chaste white. Original owner of a 95 with original paint,
If your talking the engine bay as well then your figure at 4K is correct. I'll just say that what I paid was more but if you want to talk about crispy clean and flawless paint jobs. My car would have to be one of them...
Good luck...

I wish it was only 4K
All the quotes I've received to repaint my car (original silverstone) have been in the 7-8 K range. Granted I've only gone to the better shops and that includes jams. I guess everything in the bay area is more!
I see lousy paintjobs from decent shops all the times at shows and whatnot, its rather sad that i can outpaint them and do better body work out of the POS garage that i use, lol.
Where are you located =). Maybe someday I can entrust you with painting my FC =D.

So, would it cost less for a paint job if you did some of the prep work yourself? Like sanding and primering?
I was thinking about painting my 7 and I want to know what I can do to save a few bucks, since my pockets are VERY shallow! LOL

Hey when you get to San Jose, let me know. Let's talk about painting my car the right way! I'm in the North Bay but I'm willing to drive a little way for paint done right.

OK then,
My car is also VR, and it's faded / thin all over. If I remove all the trim, seals, bumpers, fender liners, etc and trailer the car to a shop, how much might that take off the cost? (Engine bay not included)
Also, does the durability of the paint improve if the shop has plenty of time to let it cure completely between layers? (Can it cure outside of the booth?)

Well, I had my entire car painted and the bodyshop did all the work including removing everything and painting all the door trims, hatch trim, engine (removed by me) and all other trims/seals. It was a custom color and I ended up paying nearly $6000 for the entire color change. Well worth it for me, but I guess it's a personal decision whether you'd be willing to pay as much.
Keep in mind you get "EXACTLY" what you pay for. So, if you take it around chances are you'll find a cheaper shop, but will the paint and quality last? That's the real question, money should be secondary. Depends on your priorities is all I'm saying.

Dave, that'll take a "significant" amount off of the cost. I've been told that body-prep works tends to take a lot of time and effort, which naturally equals significant increases in money.
For reference, I asked the same bodyshop that painted my FD about another member's FD. They told me just to re-spray with them doing all the prepwork it would cost $2000 w/out engine. Keep in mind that's a hook-up for me, but I think it's a great price. Hope that helps a little...
My car has a few dents and dings that would need pulled and smoothed, so that will add on.
I know the prep work is important and time-consuming, but I guess I'm trying to understand how much is installing and removing parts and trim, and how much is sanding and masking.
I'm sure that if all the trim is gone, the masking will go a lot faster since every edge will be completely hidden.
As for the "you get what you pay for", well if it exceeds $3k it's not happening. It's not that I want a show-car finish, but I want it to look as good as new and be durable too.

Mine is being done right now...the old color was MB and the new color is Kaiser Silver. It was a color used on NSX for 98 and 99...I think there were 94 of them brought to the US. My cost is $3400. That includes the door jams, hatch jam, and a good part of the engine bay.
It helped knowing one of the owners...and being a former NSX owner
Probably would have cost me around $5000...
Here's the color...it will be done next Friday...

I've had my car repainted twice. Both times between $3000-5000 depending on what else they were doing. If you search through some of my posts there are plenty of pictures of my car out there. Here are some high res ones I know of off hand:
