Crazy SA project for XMAS

The title may be deceiving, but I thought some of you might get a kick out of this.

RX7s have a history in my family since the late 70s when my grandfather (no past on) bought one of the early SA Rx7s, then sold it to my aunt who then sold it to my father to buy another RX7 (an '85 GSL-SE i believe) and then of course I got addicted at a very young age and have since owned 6.

Anyways, when my grandfather bought his first one, he also bought a model car of it in 1980 but sadly never put it together. My dad got it when he passed on 14 years ago and HE never put it together, so about 2-3 years ago he gave it to me and this year for XMAS.. i am finally assembling it.

Hey, if I cant work on my real RX in the winter, I'll get my fix somehow.

My plan is to finish it up tomorrow and Sunday and present it to him for Christmas. He can give it back to me when he's ready...

Here's some pics (kinda blurry, sorry).

Now THAT is the smallest rotary engine i've had to build! The engine was in 9 parts!

The paint doesnt look as good in the pictures, but I plan to clear it and polish it tomorrow. Its HOK black pearl to match my old '85 GSL...

Awesome - so I assume you did not put yours together yet?

I'm finishing mine up today and probably a little tomorrow. I've never built a model car before.

The engine looks awesome now that I've got it painted, etc. I'm actually using engine paints, body paints, etc too.. hopefully it turns out well!

sweet, sweet. I've got a rx-5 cosmo 1:20th that im working on currently. if you look at the box on that SA model you've got... some dumbass v8 lover wrongly assembled it! the intake isn't glued onto the carb, but in fact right atop the center of the engine! something that bugged me lol, as my friend has that kid

Hahaha, this reminds me of a project i did a few years back. I took a old school Mazda RX7 model kit and then scratch built a RC chassis to fit the body. I thought you guys might get a kick out of it...

Good luck, the whole thing was scratch built except for the body. I cut the chassis out of a sheet of carbon fiber, used steering knuckles from a out of production japanese kawada M24, motor mount from a HPI micro Rs4, custom made servo and steering linkage, and on and on. Took forever to build, but was very fun!

Sweet - I completely forgot about this thread. I'll get my pics up...

My dad didn't even remember that he gave me the model when he opened it on XMAS. It sits in his "car room" now where it belongs.

The glue/cement I used wasn't as good though, the rear glass didn't stick too well. I even scuffed the paint a little to get it to adhere plastic on plastic...

I know, I know - I totally dropped the ball on the pics. I keep forgetting about it.

here they are...

My digi cam sucks at taking close-detailed pics. The paint looks good though. Black pearl

Unfortunately, I had to repair the front bumper and windshield after he opened it as I was in a rush to get it wrapped and the cement only sat for about 2 hours before being boxed up.
