How far can you go before you Blow it?

Hi everyone.
I am a newbie owner.
I have read/studied these forums for almost 2 years at this point.
I was wondering if you could give me your thoughts/knowledge on what can be done to improve performance without changing injectors, ECU and what not, before you risk destruction.
I only have a downpipe.
I have read and searched, but I only find scattered information.
Let me know and thank you in advance.
