They pulled that crap on my GF in her 96 200 sx!!! She was already lateand giving the CHP officer a hard time, he told her it wasnt manditory, just a servey, but he also wouldn't let her leave either?!. I think he was full of ****, but either way there was a smog tech that popped the hood, removed her air filter, and told her a K&N filter was NOT smog legal. He said it was missing a imprinted bar code!!! She didnt get a ticket of anything, but the are becoming more common. I would bet 100 the the info is sent to the state if you dont pass, but I dont know.BTW it was in the city of Torrance for her, about 3 months ago I guess.

Jeff @ Rotary Power told me about his fun with the smog dyno too. I think it is a middle of the day/ light traffic when they do it.

Not trying to start a flamewar, but the LS1 is something to consider if smog is a concern... Mine is 100% legal as an engine swap, and I never have to fear smog, ever.
I could bolt on a ATI supercharger and see 450 smog legal rwhp too.

I wonder how many ******* times I have posted this. I went ahead and highlighted the important portions for the reading impaired. Have a nice day.

The California Department of Consumer Affairs/Bureau of Automotive Repair (DCA/BAR) and California Highway Patrol (CHP) conduct the state’s roadside vehicle emissions survey. The survey's purpose is to provide a "real world" profile of emissions from California’s cars and trucks. The data is used to help measure California's Smog Check program by determining statewide emissions levels and monitoring those levels over time. In addition, the survey is necessary to demonstrate to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency that California's Smog Check program meets federal emissions reduction requirements for ozone-forming pollution generated by motor vehicles. The study also evaluates various emissions testing procedures. California motorists have been participating in state-operated roadside emissions surveys since 1972.
The study is conducted in phases by four teams, who together visit over 300 locations around the state every year. The sites are chosen by first randomly selecting ZIP codes and then determining sites that are safe for conducting the tests.
At each site, one lane of traffic is coned off for testing equipment. A CHP officer directs randomly-selected vehicles to that lane.
Motorists whose vehicles are selected for testing are greeted by a BAR representative who provides them with information about the survey's purpose and answers any questions they might have. Although participation in the survey is not mandatory; it is critical to the success of the survey. The BAR representative will do everything possible to accommodate motorists who are selected for the survey.
The emissions survey tests vehicles on a treadmill-like device called a dynamometer that is now being used to conduct Smog Check inspections in the state’s smoggiest regions. By simulating driving conditions, dynamometers provide the most accurate emissions readings for hydrocarbons (HC), carbon monoxide (CO), and oxides of nitrogen (NOx).
Vehicles are tested solely for the purpose of gathering data. They do not "pass" or "fail" the roadside emissions tests, so these tests add no additional repair requirements for drivers of high-polluting vehicles. The procedure usually lasts less than 10 minutes.
At the conclusion of each test, the driver receives a Vehicle Inspection Report (VIR) detailing the results. The report may not be substituted for a vehicle's official Smog Check.
In some locations, vehicles may also pass by a Remote Sensing Device (RSD), which uses infrared technology to measure vehicle emissions. The data gathered from the RSDs at these sites is also used only for research purposes.

Ive done one of these roadsides in my vanagon, which I knew would fail a bi annual smog check, and was just sent on my way.
I like breathing so I wouldnt mind if they did hassel the gross polluters out there.

Sure a lot of people would fail, but what if I rolled on by and they popped my hood to find a bunch of mods...and can smell my wonderful rotary exhaust with no cats? They can't just let me go about my merry way...
1: Any correlation between a negative survey on your car, and on your next bi-annual smog being required to go to a Test-Only-Center?
2: How come when driving through the infrared sensor Remote Sensor they take a picture of your license plate? Any correlation with that and required to got to a Test-Only-Center next biannual smog?
3: How come the 200SX above was not allowed to leave it it is voluntary?
4: Where can I see the results of the research?

How about an answer to the questions? You sir are guilty of fallacious reasoning.
1. Evading the issue.
2. Ad Hominem. (though not direct but still)
Avoiding the issue is a major Fallacy among politicians and Law enforcement officers. And Socal you fell into the trap my friend.

What the hell are you talking about? I am not associated with the state at all. If you are so gun-ho on seeing the results, why don't you contact the right resources. All I did was quote a state website explaining the tests.

But I imagine that website falls into your conspiracy theory so it doesn't count.

I didn't say you had anything to do with any group, state, or agency for whatever that's worth. There is no implication or reason to lead to a conclusion that I or anyone on here is talking about conspiracy. So what the hell are you talking about?
All I'm saying is your discussing a topic, (seems like your on the defending side, not to mention a little annoyed) and attacking someone personally has no valid argumentative ground. Instead of answering the question, you belittle someone and by doing so you also change the subject. Resulting in you not having to answer the questions. That is what I said in my previous post. Sorry I confused you.
I am not the one who asked the questions. So I am not the Gun-Ho person you sought me out to be. I was just saying, you didn't answer his questions. Not one.

You are looking way far into this. This is the WEST SECTION. When insults are flying, they are usually in good fun. So don't come in here out of thin air and pass judgements. You will know when insults are genuine around here. I am used to these clowns around here jumping down my throat when I post contradicting information. It happens all of the time. The funny part is, I am ridiculed when I post actual information from a government webiste when all the other information is just word-of-mouth. I guess it is because the goverment lies to the public so much.

To far? We just want an answer. How is that to far? Is the WEST SECTION different from another section. I missed the sticky.
What are you implying here? That because I don't post as much as you my opinion should not be expressed? I have not judged you in any way. I don't even know you. I just made an observation.
I don't know if your being sarcastic or what. Is that also a quote; the government lying to people all the time. Your the one looking to far into this. Understand that all I said was that by "joking" around you didn't answer any questions, Socal not being creditable is not an answer. That's it. Nothing else. No government lies, no conspiracy, not accusing you of belonging to any association or group. Nothing. Just as usual the thread is taken in a different direction. I see it happening more than it should.
Back to topic: I have never seen one of these. What should one look for? And also, I mean if we don't know its there and driving that way its too late already. I'm sure if they where taking pics of the plates its for more than just research. Unless they're studying the affect of emission on the alloy of the plate. Hmm its holding up pretty well.

hmm... Your reaching there buddy. What I said was after all this. Clearly not on topic, and understand what you read. I was saying that you are not staying on topic. Dear God... you scratch your head anymore and your going to give yourself have a bald spot.

What I am trying to explain to you is, throwing jabs back and forth is what we do here in this section. If it bothers you so much that you have to call everybody on it, then I suggest you go to another forum. Yes, I threw a jab at "socalrotor." He throws them at me. It was done at that point, until you made this claim about me. "Avoiding the issue is a major Fallacy among politicians and Law enforcement officers."
So give me a ******* break. In any case, I can come into any thread I damn well please and insult who I want. I do not need to check in with you before I do so.
Glad to see we have a new tool in the West Section that we can have fun with. Enjoy your stay.
