Oh boy, this is going to get moved...

Go to another inspection station.
I think the tint meter you want to is not calibrated.

Yes, it helps to clean your glass!
Is it that dirty???
Don't use ammonia on the tint film!!!

This is what I had to do in NH. I had to get a letter from my optomotrist saying that my eyes were sensitive to bright sunlight and that he recommended window tinting. I then sent that to the NHDMV along with the permit application. They sent me back a permit, only good for two years. What do they think, your eyes are going to get better in two years? I had gone to 2 inspection stations that told me the same thing, that my tint wouldn't pass, unless that is, that its factory tint. Thats the part I didn't get. If its factory, it OK???? If they're concerned with "light transmisivity" then what the hell does it matter whether its factory tint or aftermarket? Anyway, sorry if I'm ranting. So after I got the permit issued by the NHDMV, I got the car inspected. At the next annual inspection, I decided to go to another inspection station. I forgot to tell them I had the permit in the glovebox. No problem.....it passed anyway. They didn't even care about the permit. I mentioned what I had gone through and they said that as far as they were concerned, if it passes their light meter test, its fine. Mine passed by 1 percent. I know this was a bit long, but, I would try another inspection station. If that doesn't work, check with the Mass DMV to see what the regs are, and see if there is a way around it.

Slip the guy a 20 and tell him to give you the sticker.
I had to give my guy 80 for my inspection sticker.

Regarding the e-brake, what do you mean it's sketchy?

Maybe you just need to tighten the cables.

Unscrew the plastic covers surrounding the e-brake. There should be a 10mm (IIRC?) nut there, looking right up at you, tighten it a few turns. That will tighten the cables going to the rear calipers. Hopefully that's the case, and you won't need new calipers.

Good luck,
James

I haven't seen one of these light meters but your odds have to be better on a sunny day. There's bound to be some light leakage.

Well, this is a new one on me! They check your tints???? what the hell...i've gotten my unfair share of tickets for tints but never in a million years would i have imagined that it would be included as part of a state emissions inspection. Thats cute, I wonder what else is out there.
Go to another place or find a hook up. Good luck!

You're lucky that you can have tinting... in NJ, ANY aftermarket tinting on the front windows (in the case of the RX, the side windows since it's a coupe) will fail you...

trust me, I know from experience 2 inspections in a row!

(I've also been failed for not having the shift pattern for the transmission marked anywhere)
