Why does a GSL-SE weigh 300 lbs more?
Why does a GSL-SE weigh 300 lbs more?
According to pages provided on the
Beyond the Redline web site, the 1984-85 GSL-SE weighs 305 pounds more than the standard a standard GSL.
I found this statistic to be quite surprising and interesting.... So, anyone know what makes up that weight difference? How much of that is due to the engine, vs. the other items?

The engine's a bit heavier, as are the larger brakes, larger wheels and tires, and probably all the extra standard equipment (AC, Pwr Strg, etc.) I don't think there was any such thing as a stripped-down GSL-SE. I also have strong reason to believe that the curb weight Mazda advertised on the base model was a tad optimistic. (perhaps they filled the tires and interior with helium?)

Thinking back (WAY back), when I purchased my then new RX-7 in the fall of 1984, I wanted an "S" model without the A/C, PW, PS, and so forth in order to save weight. I just can't believe that it adds up to over 300 lbs! Wow!
