I have a GXL that I want to turbo. I know I need the exhaust manifold, turbo, ic, ECU, and wireing harness. What else is needed???. I have heard since I have and 87 that I will need to rewire all my guages also. Is this true??? How long will the N/A trans and rear dif last if I use it. How much boost will I be limited to with the mods already done to my car??? Any other insights will be nice Thanks for the help Dave

 

Are you saying that you want to put a turbo on your 87 N/A motor? Or convert the whole car to TII?

 

turbo a N/A but what do I need to do and how do I go about doin it. What do I need off the T2 and how to install it

 

this question comes up like twice a week. Back in the old days on the forum the general opinion was that you're better off selling the na and buying a whole t2. latley the opinion has seemed to sway, but I think that the problems with putting a turbo on an na far exceed any benifit. Remember, because of the higher compression rotors on an na you'll only be able to run low boost pressures. YOU ARE BETTER TO SELL THE NA AND BUY A T2.

All the info that you need is probally already posted in an older thread.

A kit would be nice but the thing is I have no $. THats why I want to know what I need to peice together my own kit. I already have the ECU what else would I need? Thanks for the help Dave

 

$600 is too much to turbo your car?? then good luck... doing it right will cost thosands... keep saving and try again next year after you've had time to research.

 

Hey ******* I said I dont have the money right now to buy the kit thats up for sale. Hence I am going to peice that kit together my self so I can do the swap in the spring. Thats why my question was WHAT DO I NEED TO PUT A TURBO IN A 87 GXL. And just for reference I intead I doing it the RIGHT way.

Hey man dont have to call anyone names here, he just had the wrong idea geez...Anyways I'm the one that made that kit and it took me a lot of hours looking and fitting and cutting to actually make a kit, so good luck to ya
BTW the T2 ECU is not needed and will not work anyway.

 

Do you plan on making the kit on a regular basis for sale Vtecheater? or was it for your friend and now he doesn't want it?

 

Well I might consider making some more but not a lot....And on my friends car the reason he is selling it is because we blew his motor at the track as an expiriment to see how much the N/A motor could handle before blowing
Anyways we turned the boost controller up and the boost spiked
to 15 psi no intercooler and that run had him in the 110 mph range, but on the second run he blew the motor right by the 1/8 mile.
And now I convinced him to get a T2 motor a T04 and a haltech, a much better package I think.

 

Can you make me a list of parts that are needed to make the turbo kit. thanks Dave

 

You wanted opions so i'll give you mine....GO GET A TII. you are looking for a pain in the ***..and a lot of money..plus like stated earlier you wont be able to run that much boost because of higher compression. you could pick up a 87-88 TII for fairly cheap and put the money into that..and still have money left over at the end.

Well judging from how you responded to scott 89 t2. You will probally get pissed off at me for what i just said. But oh well..i just had to say it with this topic coming up every other time i check the forum. So with my upfront and honest opion already stated, if you got the time, money, and patience to turn your N/A into a Turbo then go ahead...it has been done before...but i would rather start with a car that was already turbo.
